EVENT Mummers Day
Experience Christmas as it might have been celebrated 700 years ago at Chirk Castle in Wrexham, Wales. Meet the Lord of Misrule, watch mummers plays, and try medieval Christmas food. The castle will be dressed in traditional style, there will be crafts including candle making and leather working, and flaming braziers on which to warm your hands. So festive!

RECIPE Vegan Treats
Vegan? Cutting down on refined sugar? Want to experiment with raw food but still craving delicious festive sweet treats? Why not try out some of these ideas? The Decadent Vegan Truffles recipe is ridiculously good, and the Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle with Habanero looks spicy and indulgent. Mmmmmm!

LEARN Know Your Rights
December 9–16 is Human Rights Day
It commemorates the date on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It’s a great springboard to use to teach your kids a bit more about the issues involved. Go here to find learning resources for all ages (we like the idea of creating a human rights tree). Amnesty International provide a stimulating Write for Rights pack which brings together five activities for young people and is free to download from here

MAKE Snow Cones
Pine-cone Christmas trees are cheering and lots of fun to make – you’ll end up with glitter all over your house – so beautiful! Great for your mantlepiece, or make a few to use as table decorations.

EVENT Holly and the Ivy
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a wonderful place to duck into to escape the relentless consumerism of December. There are some magical Christmas events happening this weekend, which will make it even more atmospheric than usual. Gaze up at the canopy of stars in the grand entrance, meet Queen Victoria, ready to re-live the magic of December 1843, follow a playful paper origami trail to find 12 Christmas objects around the museum, listen to carols, or join in and sing some, and remix Victorian Christmas cards digitally to create a design to take away and send to friends. And all for free!
