EVENT Blooming Marvellous

The (mostly free) Bloomsbury festival is one of the highlights of our year – the area is a great place to visit, with its strange museums and odd little nooks and crannies, and even more fun to explore when there are quirky and fun things to do such as sculpting a hand gesture at the Wellcome Collection, enjoying storytelling at the British Library, going on a storytelling adventure and making a den at the October Gallery, or taking part in an immersive street theatre, sci-fi treasure hunt that takes place on the streets of the area! Full line-up here

RECIPE Chocs Away

The crisper days and earlier evenings of Autumn are a fine excuse to start experimenting with crazily indulgent hot chocolate recipes. We’re a fan of the thick and strong Spanish version (there’s an easy recipe here), but can’t wait to try out the 14 recipes listed here. Coconut tres leches hot chocolate anyone?

LEARNING Snappy Safari

The Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition opens today. The images are always sensational – and may inspire you to try out wildlife photography for yourself. Kids don’t need fancy gear – an old telephone with a camera will do – there are some great hints here. Take your cameras out on an autumn walk, and hold a mini exhibition when you return. You don’t need to be in the countryside proper; urban wildlife can be just as fun to try to capture. Be inspired by the work of Sam Hobson.

EVENT Peel Sessions

October 21 is Apple Day, a celebration of the most English of fruits. Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk celebrates on Sunday , with apple-themed activities, juicing and crafts, there are celebrations of all fruits green and red at Dunham Massey in Cheshire all weekend, and Borough Market in London celebrates with October Plenty, parading Berry Man, and with wonderful theatre shows and apple peeling competitions.

CRAFT Good Yarns

French knitting is fun and easy for even the tiniest hands, but it’s sometimes difficult to figure out what to make with the end result. We love this very pretty idea of forming words with the resulting thick braids – perhaps even try spelling out your children’s names.
