Easter outdoor fun

With the holidays approaching there are plenty of fun outdoor activities taking place across the country to get your tribe out into the fresh air. Easter is the perfect time to dust off your walking boots and get outside. Read on for ideas of where to go and what to do.

With the natural world springing into life, there’s lots to interest and inspire young minds. Easter is traditionally a time for celebrating the abundance of the earth and new life. Birds are busy with their young and if you look to the skies in April you can see many of our beloved feathered friends returning from migration. Our ancestors were so confused by the return of the swallows, they deduced that the birds had spent the winter hidden in the mud at the bottom of ponds! With loads of fun nature-based activities going on up and down the country, you’re sure to find something to keep your family busy.

1st – 15th April, Professor Egghead’s Clean Sweep, Scottish Seabird Centre
What better way to celebrate this special time of year than by doing your bit to help the natural world? You can join Professor Egghead daily at North Berwick East Beach, Milsey Bay, to help clean up the seashore, to provide a cleaner habitat for puffins and other wildlife, with equipment and bad jokes provided! The Clean Sweep will be followed by Professor Egghead’s Aqua Adventure science show in the Discovery Centre. Have a look at the website for other fun activities.

31st March – 15th April, Easter Eggs-stravaganza, Pensthorpe Nature Reserve
Take part in a fun self guided Easter trail around the beautiful Pensthorpe Nature Reserve in Norfolk. The trail reveals fun facts about the Easter season and the wildlife associated with it, and there are games for the whole family to enjoy. There’s a special treat for those who answer all the questions. Plus, there’s a chance to watch the daily bird feed from the viewing gallery as the Reserve wardens talk about the water fowl at Pensthorpe.

4th – 30th April, Spring Birds, RSPB Minismere Nature Reserve
One for the avid bird-watchers out there! RSPB Minismere Nature Reserve claims to be one of the best places in the country to see and hear the widest variety of birds in spring, and on this exciting walk they’ll aim to show you as many as possible.

8th April, Easter Egg-stravaganza, Castell Henlys, Pembrokeshire
An Easter fun day with prizes galore! You can have a go at egg dyeing and enjoy a bit of egg rolling, with a prize for the most ambitious egg (roller!). There’s also a fun treasure hunt with the chance to win another prize. Castell Henlys is a special day out all year round, with over eighty activities and events that take place every year, including storytelling, traditional craft workshops and experimental archaeology.
