Did you know that breakfast provides 25 – 30% of your daily energy needs? With the tagline ‘Shake Up Your Wake Up’, Farmhouse Breakfast Week, now in its 13th year, has big breakfast ideas! From 22 - 28th January, celebrate this annual event with some new recipes.
Farmhouse Breakfast Week aims to help Britons rediscover the joys and health benefits of a good breakfast. With events and promotions happening up and down the country, you’re sure to find something to enjoy, from visiting your local farmers’ market, attending an open day at your local farm, or feasting on an all-day breakfast at your local café. And there’s no better place to get stuck in than in your own kitchen – check out these recipes to get you kick-started every morning:
Bran Flake Breakfast Pancakes
Delicious with fresh fruit and honey
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
150g self raising flour
1 medium egg
2 tbsp clear honey
150ml semi skimmed milk
25g sultana
50g bran flakes
Method
1. Place the flour in a large bowl and whisk in the egg
2. Gradually add the honey and then milk and whisk to form a batter
3. Stir in the sultanas and bran flakes
4. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and spoon 4 tablespoons of the mixture into the pan
5. Cook gently for 1-2 minutes, turn over and cook for 1 minute until golden
6. Repeat to make 4 more pancakes
7. Serve drizzled with honey and a scattering of fresh fruit
Breakfast energy bars
Make up a batch for a quick nutritious hit when you’re on the go
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Total time: 25 minutes
Serves: 12
Ingredients
100g butter
200g clear honey
200g rolled oats
150g mixed seeds
100g toasted flaked almonds
100g sultanas
50g ground almonds
2 tsp sesame seeds
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, Gas Mark 4
2. Heat the butter and honey in a saucepan until the butter has melted.
3. Stir in the remaining ingredients except sesame seeds and press into a 22cm square baking tin
4. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds
5. Bake for 15 minutes until golden
6. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into 12 bars
7. Leave in the tin to cool completely before removing
Blueberry and banana smoothie
A meal in a glass
Ingredients
1 ripe banana chopped
125g blueberries
25g porridge oats
15g wheatgerm
1 tsp honey
75ml semi-skimmed milk (use rice or oat milk if vegan/allergic)
Method
1. Pour all the ingredients in a blender or food processor together and whiz until smooth
2. Thin with extra milk if necessary
