Preparing kids for back to school
As your children head back to school you have probably spent time encouraging them to be friendly and kind, to work hard and to be enthusiastic – all great qualities that will help them form new relationships and get along well in class.

You have probably also built up their confidence, encouraging them to believe in their abilities and their potential.

You have probably also focussed on instilling within them a positive attitude for the experiences that lie ahead and stated the importance of staying calm if things get stressful or go wrong.

Being a parent can feel like being a coach, a cheerleader and a therapist all rolled into one. It can feel like hard work but supporting their emotional health and wellbeing is vital if we want them to be robust, resilient, and happy.

We encourage kids to eat well and exercise each day and we need to give that same daily attention to their emotional health.

Inspiration for every day
My series of inspirational books, 365 days of Calm, Kind and Happy aim to give kids a little boost of wellbeing inspiration for every day of the year.

Each week is themed and begins with a fun activity such as thinking of others, spending time in nature or practising self-kindness.

Then, throughout the week, there are beautiful and inspiring quotes and affirmations to support the theme.

The books are vibrant and colourful, and the quotes are straightforward and uplifting.

Reading them can be done together or alone if your child prefers. They will ideally be read first thing in the morning or on return from school. This gives kids time to absorb and reflect on what they have read, practice the affirmation, or try out the activity

Empowering
By completing the activities children will learn through their experiences (always the most powerful way to learn).

Though listening to uplifting quotes, kids will feel understood, moved, and motivated

By practising affirmations – repeatedly telling themselves they are capable, competent and fabulous children will realise that positive self-talk has a powerful effect.

It is empowering for children to discover tools to help themselves rather than being reliant solely on others to change their mood.

If they come to see that through actions, words, and affirmations they can change how they feel, think and behave then they will feel empowered. They will realise there is always something they can do help themselves when life is challenging and this boosts both their confidence and self-reliance

Let’s send our kids back to school with daily input into their emotional health so they have their coping skills they will need to face the obstacles and embrace the opportunities ahead of them, now and in the future.
