Samhain events

Samhain (or Halloween) falls on 31st October and marks the Celtic new year. There are plenty of inspiring and interesting events taking place across the UK. Here's our pick of the best.

Fri 21st Oct– 7th Nov
Spirits of Meath Festival
Fun by Day, Frights by Night at Ireland’s biggest and spookiest Halloween Festival! Join us to celebrate the ancient festival of Samhain with over 35 events taking place over a two week period. Finishes with torchlit procession from Athboy to Hill of Ward to light the Samhain Fires 7pm on 31st! Full programme on www.meathtourism.ie

Mon 24th to 28th Oct
Enjoy 5 days of celebrations at Butser Ancient Farm in Hants. The whole week will be dedicated to crafts and on Friday afternoon everyone will gather in the Great Roundhouse with Red Phoenix for storytelling. Friday evening features folk band and more for adults.

Sat 29th Oct
The debut Avalon Children’s Faery Ball featuring Sparkle the Fairy & friends will take place in the small hall at Glastonbury Assembly Rooms while the Faery Fayre takes place in the main hall, so parents can enjoy the fayre whilst their children are at the Faery Ball!

Sun 30th Oct
Join artist Sinead Mc Geeney on the eve of Samhain to have a spooky look at some skeletons and recreate your own using black clothing and fluorescent lights! Please bring long-sleeved, black clothing. Suitable for ages seven and upwards at The National Museum of Ireland in Kildare St.

Sun 30th Oct
Sit around the protective Crannog fire at the Scottish Crannog Centre in Perthshire for music, ancient myths and legends in preparation for the Samhain and Celtic New Year celebrations from 6-8pm. Enjoy hot soup, baked apples, and special Samhain exhibition.

Sun 30th Oct
Step back in time at Castell Henllys in mid Wales, a unique Iron Age hill fort recreated with roundhouse built on top of excavated remains dating back 2,400 years. Join in with a Celtic halloween celebration at this ancient monument and expect stories, games and more.
