    What is buy nothing month?

    What is buy nothing month?

Every year at The Green Parent we celebrate Buy Nothing Day on 27th November with a month long challenge of non-consumerism. We get to rediscover time together, recipes for thrifty seasonal meals, books that we had forgotten to read and clothes that need altering or mending. It’s a chance to get creative!

We had a BNM last year and it was a chance for us to explore our relationship with money and really assess our needs and wants. We experienced more time together as a family and a greater sense of resourcefulness, especially in the kitchen. So what are we going to do without this November?

No food purchases apart from a weekly seasonal veg box.

No newspapers, books, etc. Instead of buying more, we’ll concentrate on reading the toppling piles of books round the house and relearn to trust our innate knowledge rather than looking to books for answers.

No clothes purchases – easy one really since we only shop in charity shops sporadically. We’ll make an effort this month to repair clothes and get creative.

No trips out that cost money – instead we’ll use bikes to explore our local area.

Share your stories – let us know what you are doing on Buy Nothing Day.

Welcome to the new blog from the Green Parent office. Here we'll talk about what's going on in the small and quite leafy headquarters of the UK's leading green lifestyle magazine. We'll share news that interests us and talk about green issues and natural parenting. We'll share advice and information from our own experiences of living a green lifestyle. And we'll even tell you what we are reading, eating, drinking and thinking. Hope you get plenty of food for thought here.
