Composting cloth?

Feeling very proud of myself - have just upcycled some totally past it cloth nappies into extra boosters and cleaning cloths, but I have been left with a small pile of scraps - more hole than fabric - definitely no use for anything else. Can I compost them? There were, once upon a time, Little Lamb nappies - very old ones, so I would guess cotton, but they could possibly be bamboo.

Zero Waste Week

It starts on Monday and I was wondering if anyone is taking part and if so what are you doing?

After much thought I have decided to reduce our waste. We have a Vipp Bin that we use Brabantia slim line bin liners in (have tried allsorts including eco ones and they fit the best. We think we go through 3ish a week between three of us and dh when he is home. So I have decided to reduce this down to one.

So anyone else?

Reusing a car seat?

So, we were given an infant car seat - used about three times, never been in a crash - BUT, it is quite old and American, and the consensus of opinion seems to be that it doesn’t conform to modern British safety standards, so obviously we don’t want to actually use it for Jude. Any ideas of what we can use it for? It’s bulky, so I don’t really want it as a plaything, but if I take it to the tip it will either go in landfill or they will sell it on, and if it isn’t safe I don’t want that on my conscience.

I am drawing a blank - currently it will just go in the garage….

Electrical items

Does anyone know how I can recycle these. I have things such as a old stereo, portable dvd player, coffee maker and various other small items. They either don’t work or I no longer have use for them. I thought the local dump would recycle them but apparently they only recycle certain things like tv’s so if I leave them there I am guessing they will go to landfill. The local charity shops won’t take them due to do with health and safety and having to test electrical items.

It’s zero waste week 2011

Hi Ladies,

It’s zero waste week this week! It’s our fourth annual event and we have a facebook page, hashtag and blog page set up. I’d love some of you to join in either on the site or facebook and pledge to reduce your waste.

This years theme is Reducing waste away from home, so can involve things like taking water with you when out rather than buying in plastic bottles, making zero waste lunches, saying no to straws or plastic stirrers etc. If you’re not out and about this week then go ahead and reduce waste at home instead!

You can view our blog page: http://myzerowaste.com/zero-waste-week-2011/
Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=262748570409594 (please ‘attend’)
or use the hashtag #nzww

Thanks so much for joining in!

SC x

Free to a good home: two-part nappy system

Really hoping someone can make use of this. I have a used set of:

- 20 organic cotton terry nappies (they are clean but a bit crunchy and there is some light staining on some of them as we only use eco balls - I’m sure a stronger washing powder and/or a bit of sunshine will get it out)
- 5 newborn and 5 size 1 waterproof imse vimse nappy wraps (were £10 each, like motherease but with organic cotton on the outside, again clean but some staining)
- a few rolls of 100 nappy liners,
- a pack of nappy nippas and a pack of nappy pins
- mesh bag for nappy bucket
plus an almost full pack of nature care size 1 disposable eco nappies

It is a massive bin bag full and really heavy so I can’t post it - would anyone be interested in collecting? We are in RG26, Bramley (20 min north of basingstoke, 25 mins south or Reading).

Leader cot bed free if you pick it up and take it away! - Cheshire

Very pressed for space and difficult to believe there isn’t anyone who wouldn’t want this…
http://www.lilimay.com/nursery-furniture/leander/leander_bed.php

Cost £500 odd new, it is is the sort of thing you could use for generations, but we can’t store it and so need to get rid.
Babes has used it. Could do with scrub and if you need instructions or spare screws you can get them from manufacturer.
PM me for hopefully hassle free pick up (Cheshire) we need the space!
best

My stick blender and attachments has died :( I think after several false starts it has finally given up the ghost, and is almost certainly beyond repair. It has a switch in the middle of the lead where the wiring went wrong so my dad stripped it out and put a switch in instead, and the speed controller has melted onto the fastest setting, but it was gamely carrying on regardless until today, when it just started intermittently cutting out.

I just wondered whether there was any way of disposing of it in as responsible way as possible? I don’t just want to landfill it if there is another option, but it really is beyond handing on to anyone or a charity shop in its complete form.
