We currently go out twice a week for an activity of such , swimming library etc.. but when reading all the lovely blogs I read I notice that people go to workshops and events , but how do you find out about these in advance ? we have car and are able to travel .. Is there some huge database somewhere of events that I’m missing??? x

Hi
I belong to 2 Yahoo groups for local HE’ers, so most of our trips out are found on there; one family hears of a trip and posts it asking if anyone else wants to go; or if there is something you are interested in (tour round a factory, etc) ask how many people are required to make the trip viable, then see if you can fine enough other families to go with you. Also worth looking in local newspapers for events and then find other families to come along too; also check out anywhere who have school trips (theatre, nature centres,  museums, etc) as they will probably do the same workshop/ tour for a HE group as for a school.
I have found that once 1 or 2 people start to arrange trips then other families start too, so it might be you needing to get the ball rolling and hope others take it up too.

Pick up lots of leaflets from the library, nature reserves, cafes .. anywhere, you can always pass them on when fisnihed, recycle etc.
I find out about lots of things that way and book them up way in advance.
I agree with emily’s mum ( as I always do lol ) about perhaps getting the ball rolling with planned activities, go for something simple, walk in the park with hot choc at a cafe to start.
Have fun

We organise some of the things within our HE group, so we have art workshops run by a lovely lady with a passion for mixed media art, a civil war workshop coming up with a local re-enactment group, museum workshops etc.

We also look out for things run by local charities, such as the Coast and Countryside trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, etc.  They have a huge range of events each year, everything from pond dipping and junior rangers, to cooking from nature at a local organic farm.  We recently got in touch with the Shark Trust who have a base near us and they asked if we would like to take part in a mermaid purse survey.  It’s amazing the opportunities that can be organised or found.  Check out the local council websites as they often have an events page - or search for ‘things to do in .... *your location*’ on the internet and you will often find a local events diary.

Hugs smile xx

Got my worky head on - the prince’s chairites has lots of info on art activities for children. i think they have an email bulletin they send out regularly. contact your local arts officer/arts organisation/theatre and find out about local art databases, groups etc. You could also mention you’re HE’ing and if they are developing any projects in the future you’d be up discussing things. There is the arts award http://www.artsaward.org, which might be worth a visit. i’m an advisor and happily talk to people about it - it’s not for everyone butt i’ve had a couple of HE families talk to me about it before! I’ve also got a list of things to do from english heritage and the national trust recentley.

hope that helps a bit!

I am on the Cornwall home ed yahoo group and they have lots of stuff going on, but if I remeber correctly you are in North Cornwall and most of it is south of St Austell.  I don’t know if there is one for N Cornwall? You could always join the the cornwall group and ask

Not sure if the link will work, but here it is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cornwall_homeeducation/
