Terry Squares….??

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm being really dumb here, but I recently bought a pack of Junior Joy 'Supreme Quality' terry nappies.  The reason for this being that baby is due in Nov and I'm not sure whether DD will be out of nappies by then so will need a few extras to keep me going, and I really can't afford the expensive types of nappy at the moment so thought terries would be the cheaper option.

Anyway, they arrived yesterday and they are REALLY thin, like you can almost see through them in places.  Is this normal for terry nappies?  I know you have to fold them so they pad out down the middle etc, but I really expected them to be thicker and more fluffy.  Maybe I've just gone a bit too cheap and should have gone for the pricier version of terries, but I thought they were all the same!! ???  These cost me £32 for 18 squares, 2 wraps and 3 nappi nippas and I thought I was getting a bargain.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Hi  ;D I used Little Ewes unbleached terry squares for ages.  They are £2 each (The Nappy Lady sells them) and really are fabulous and thick and really absorbent, you would certainly never see through them.  I have never seen a Junior Joy square (I have only used the JJ washable wipes)....could you send them back and get a refund and get some Little Ewes?

JJ are definately IMO a cheap version, I just bought an emergency pack of 6 from Boots for £10 ish and they are really thick. Thin ones won't last 2 minutes and you will end up having to boost them with something else or another thin one!

Thanks Queenie, you've reassured me..  I know they'll be folded a few times on a newborn, just was so shocked at the thinness!  Been practising on a teddy and they look okay, maybe a bit baggy around the legs but the wrap should cover that.

Can I ask what wraps anyone uses with terries?  The JJ ones seem a bit small to cover the full nappy… another error on my part! ::)

Thanks for the advice.  I thought about cutting a couple down to make a smaller nappy because I know you can buy smaller sized terries, so I might try that.

The wraps I currently use with DD are Nature Babies multiwrap which I just love because they don't dig in her tummy (a very fat tummy and I'd had issues with the Motherease Velcro wraps which seems to really dig in because she has skinny legs so I had to do them really tight to fit around the legs, and then they were too tight around the waist, anyway that's beside the point!).  I do still have some newborn MotherEase velcro wraps so I might try them over the top while babe is small.  It's nice to know you use Nature Babies over the top of terries because I wasn't sure if they'd be the right fit, but knowing you use them, I might just get a few of them seeing as though I know they work and are comfy for baby, so the expense isn't so bad knowing they'll last.

I might have a look on the used nappy website too, I have sold stuff on there before.

As for our council, I enquired when I was pregnant with DD and they offer no incentives!  That's Hull for you…  >:(

I also have some of those I think as well, but in medium.  I had trouble with leakage though.  I've got loads of wraps… Went through so many trying to get ones that worked best…..

Mothereasew wraps work really well with terry squares.  Tots bots really don't work weel at all, we had a many a leaking nappy when we tried using them together!
Bascially, wraps which have a gusset and fit snugly around the leg are essential with terry squares!

i have to say I personally really like Terries, even though they are the most basic and suppsoedly least funky cloth nappy around!

Yes I can recommend the Nappy Lady site - that's where I learned my brilliant fold for terry squares smile

IMO the best terry squares are Ellie night time squares, which are fabulously luxurious, and have satin bound edges, so there's no fraying. The best wraps are undoubtedly either Popolino (alsp known as Motherease) and Nature Babies classic wraps, which you can use with virtually any nappy on the market!

Junior Joy nappies in general are cheap and basic, but 'you gets what you pays for', and cheap terry squares have their limitations! However, I'm sure they'll come in useful, even if you just cut them up to make washable wipes!

Incidentally, easy Peasy nappes have brought out a shaped birth to potty eco nappy called the eco Bumble, which retails at £3. It's a pocket (but needs a wrap) nappy, and you boost it with anything you want to - old tea towels, or old cut up towels, or even old Junior Joy nappies!!!! Terry on the outside with a fleece lining.

Great idea!!

popper wraps compared to ohers like aplix havebeen far more successful for me. The aplix ones never stay on and once tiny fingers learn how to undo them you've had it.
