Any CM home educators here? I’ve been looking into all sorts of approaches as my little boys get bigger, and nearer ‘school’ age, and I really like the feel of CM - especially the emphasis on living books and the gentleness of it all. Would be nice to know others following a similar path smile

I hadn’t come across Charlotte’s work before, but I have just downloaded the free e-book called “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life” and really liked the way it as written and found many similarities in how I am trying to approach our lives with our child. As you may know, we don’t (yet) homeschool our child attends state school, but I’m aware that we may get to the point where we are forced to - either temporarily or permanently. I don’t see attendance at school as a polar opposite to home schooling as I am very much involved with changing the school for the better. So basically, would like to keep in touch with this thread and exchange now and then if you like.

Hi Carly,

Not much time to reply now but I am majorly inspired by CM’s writings and philosophy and use Ambleside Online and SimplyCharlotteMason to guide my home-ed approach and plans.  I love the emphasis on conversation, narration and good quality books.  Our son is very well suited to this method as he has turned into a complete bookworm over the last 4 months, we read to the children for close to 2 hours per day (with as many living books as possible) and we also like the nature study aspect which has similarities to the Waldorf approach.

We are only in our first year of official home edding so it’s still all new and exciting smile  I hope you enjoy your journey as much as we are!

Thanks for the replies ladies smile

WW - I think the CM approach is very accessible, so I’m sure it would be a good one to ‘pick up and run with’ if you had to!  I hope your little girl is happy whichever way you have to go.

Our eldest is only 3 1/2 so I’m not planning on ‘doing’ anything for some time yet, although we’ve taken on board some of the ideas from Ambleside Online in regards to books for little people. I’ve got the year 1 primer I’m going through, and putting aside books we’ll need, a few at a time, so I can get famililar with them first. Another of the good things about the CM philosophy is the almost unschooling way is goes about learning…I need a bit of a plan, a structure, to feel confident, but really love the unschooling ethos, so this feels like the right path for us!

Looking forward to hearing how you get on Diana! I see you have almost three years between your two little ones too, I’ve been thinking about how to combine the two ‘years’ when the time comes. I’m sure it will develop naturally though!

xx
