I've just started reading Diaper Free Baby and I'm really inspired. I've also pre-ordered the Ingrid Bauer 'Natural Infant Hygeine book from Amazon, but it is not back in stock until November :(
How old is your little one? I wanted to start when my dd was 7 months, but was told it's alot harder after 6 months, however, an online friend started at 11 months and he was fully dry before her was 2 years!
I'm going to do ec from the start next time if i can! lol!
Hello, I'm planning on doing Ec from birth with our new baby due in August. I've also decided to take my ds Tarka out of cloth nappies whilst at home (he's 22 months) and let him roam around nappy free and have a potty avaialble to him and see how we go.
I hate the thought of him sitting in wet orr dirty nappies and he always tells us as soon as he does a poo, so as the weather is so nice I thought it would be a good time to let him be nappy free and just follow his lead with regards to EC Mia (almost 4yrs) was quite happy to pee on the potty to show him what to do this morning too, so it's going to be a family adventure I think lol!
yeah, i'm doing nappy free at the mo too. DD is only 16 months, but hv said we could start potty training cos she's had really bad nappy rash since birth (despite being in cloths!).
Hi, my DD is nearly 17 months and she has been in pants at home (nappies when we're out and for bed) for the last few weeks.
She has been well aware of her 'movements' for a long time, and we have always used a potty (due to her pooing every time I took her nappy off and I was tired of scraping poo off the carpet, towels etc, so I used to sit her on the potty at every potty change)
Anyway, it's worked really well so far, she comes running to me shouting 'wee wee' whether she needs a poo or a wee, then she runs back to the potty or toilet shouting 'kick kick' (which means 'quick quick mummy!'). Only had a few accidents so far but we did have a day where she just pooed and weed everywhere, and I just couldn't understand it, then of course the next day a tooth appeared. Teeth have a lot to answer for! ::)
Anyway, for anyone thinking about EC (not that I am an expert in the slightest), I think getting them used to using the potty/toilet etc from a young age really helps. It's all purely accidental that it has happened this way for us, but it has kind of made DD train herself, if you know what I mean
We've had a really good few days after taking Tarka (22 months) completely out of nappies at home The ifrst day he wouldn't go near the potty and weed all over the house (thank goodness we have laminate floors downstairs!) but we were very relaxed and just left the potty in sight and said 'You're doing a wee' each time he went, also made the cueing 'psshh' as you do for babies. The next day he weed on the floor and then very quickly sat on the potty and looked to see if any had gone in! And yesterday, he weed on the potty three times, completely of his own accord, only weeing on the floor once, and that was because I had left the potty in the bathroom and he was carrying it in to the living room and weeing at the same time :D
This morning, he got up, took of his nappy, weed on the potty and emptied it into the toilet without spilling a drop :D !
So, it is going well, we're still using cloth to go out and about and will just stay realxed and follow his cues.
I am so interested in EC, i dont think i would ever do it but i do think it would be the 'compleation' of being able to totally communicate with my baby. It really would not suit our life style. I have met one woman who did it and used a soup bowl type thing to hold her new born over after feeds. They lived in around house down west wales i think and did not have carpets to worry about but living in a small area had other issues with it. they cut clothes so they had a slit in the importnat place and used a flat prefold to hold under her when out and about. If any one has any more information i would love to find out more.
I've just started with my 13mth old. Have recently got the Diaper-Free baby book too and have asked my library to order in the Ingrid Bauer and Laurie Boucke books.
First heard of EC about a year ago, but was too chicken to try it out with dd. The met a lady ECing her 4mth old at last month's slingmeet and she inspired me to try with dd. DD's been in cloth nappies since birth. At the moment just doing EC parttime, letting dd and I learn her cues and start to cue her when she goes.
A few years ago when i first heard about this i thought it was crazy… just hows how much i've changed in the past year! I'm really interested in EC. Haven't read much about it yet but its def on my 'must find out about' list. DD is 18 months and we've had potties about for her to get used to for ages. Hoping to start spending chunks of time nappy free at home. She does now tell us when she's dirty by patting her bottom and has been aware of when she's weeing for ages. Her having more language will help i think as she only says a few words at the moment. Though she does sign 'quick quick quick' from the potty song when she wees in the bath. :D Would love to hear how you get on. We'll be considering it for the nexy baby.
We're definitely planning on being nappy free with the new baaby and Tarka is completely out of nappies at home, we do have laminate floors downstairs which makes life much easier I have to say, I think it would be more stressful with carpets! I also take him to wee when we're out and sometimes his nappy stays dry, sometimes not, but there's no pressure. He's evry good at using the potty and likes to wee/poo outside too!
Hi Gina - it was really easy with a newborn, much much easier than I thought it would be lol. When she got bigger she was NOT going to play though, so we just took a break (about a year in the end) and are now doing late-ec/early-potty-learning lol. My best advice is just relax and don't put any pressure on yourself to get it right, just have plenty of muslins around the place and go with the flow!
I aproached it with a "nah this just can NOT work but I'm going to give it a fair go just to see what it's like" attitude. Served me right entirely that it worked and I spent the best part of six months shocking people when they realised Morgan wasn't wearing a nappy…
Well to begin with you just hold an open nappy under them and make cue sounds any time you notice them going, and any time you start to feel the urge to take them to the toilet you take them and hold them over it and cue. I found from the first day if I just took her any time I thought about it she would always need to go, and if I tried to hard to look for body language cues I would miss them and second guess myself.
As I say I was convinced that it wouldn't work. I'm always happy to be proved wrong though.
We're having lots of success with caching wees with Willow. Mainly because she always wees within the first two mins after waking, so we hold her over a little enamel bowl and she goes almost without fail. We're using prefolds and terry squares to hold under her at home but still getting weed on quite frequently, usually because I think 'she needs to wee' but don't react quickly enough ::)
It does take a real effort not to over-think it. I spent a few days thinking, "She needs to wee, nah, she can't need to wee again, maybe I spotted a cue? No, no cues, not that I noticed. Maybe I'm just making this up and it doesn't really work. Hmm… My lap is wet now." :D
what happens at night time? What is your set up (Arwen/Gina) ? We co-sleep and I just switch the babe from one side to the other when feeding and so am wondering how it would work without a nappy…...
