I haven’t had chance to read all the other replies, so sorry if this has already been mentioned, but look at Baby Kind’s website for some fabulous explanations of lots of different types of nappies and their pros and cons. That’s where I started learning (along with this board, of course!).
You can use wraps over terries instead of the pants
Terries are actually my favourite nappies - they might not be pretty and they might not be the quickest, but they fit from birth to potty and we have NEVER had a leak in a terry. Even with my 37lb almost 4yo who is back to wearing one at night.
Oh ok…that’s interesting. So do you use disposable liners with terries? What wraps do you use on yours? I’m just hoping to keep costs down to a minimum really so open to any suggestions. Do normal clothes fit over terries nappies? If I can get off of GP forum and start learning to sew I may well teach myself to make some clothes for my children at some point! Lol! But if I don’t, I need to make sure I don’t have to spend loads of money on clothes that fit cloth bottoms!
I did use disposable liners to begin with, because I thought I was supposed to lol. But as soon as I discovered fleece liners, I never went back. Wraps, I used to use naturebabies, and some motherease airflow. Nature babies are prettier, but the motherease lasted longer in the fit, if that makes sense. Toby was quite tall, and motherease are taller in the rise than the naturebabies. Although I do love my nature babies and plan on getting more next time round. I also use fleece wraps at night- I have a couple of tots bots ones and one made by minki I think? Anyway, it has cars on. It’s quite thick and chunky, and doesnt fit under normal sized PJs. Have to go atleast one size up.
Terries can be quite slim fitting depending on which ones you buy and how you fold them. I’ve fitted normal clothes over them before. I might have had to go one size up. I can’t remember, it was so long ago. I do have some specialist made for cloth clothes, but most of the time, with all the nappies I’ve tried (prefolds, totsbots bamboozles, blueberry minki…) the only one I couldnt fit under normal clothes were the Tots bots fluffles, and they dont make those anymore.
The original outlay was about £350 and I’ve topped up on inners & outers as we’ve gone along. I have to wash every 3 days at the least but keep the used ones in bins with tight fitting lids outside as the smell can be unpleasant inside I found! I’ve used them for both my babes and for about six months they were both in nappies so the washing went through the roof.
I used Tots bots for them when they were newborn and until they were9/12 months then switched to Motherease which are more comfortable for growing babas I think. I have a waterproof outer for each day of the week and roughly 30 nappies plus 7 boosters.
I love using them and love them adorning my washing line. I will be gutted once my cloth nappy journey is over. Enjoy!
We, like you, converted to cloth for our second baby - I don’t know if Jamie is potty trained yet or whether you still use nappies for him? DD1 had just turned 2 and wasn’t (and still isn’t!) out of nappies so we went for a birth to potty that we could use for both of them and chose motherease one size (MEOS) like many other mamas on here! Hubby was really unsure so I said that to start a basic collection I’d spend no more than I would do on 6 weeks worth of sposies and, if after that 6 weeks, either of us really didn’t like it then we’d go back to sposies and we wouldn’t have been any financially worse off for it! Overall, I’ve bought from ebay and used nappy company and a few from here too! I bought tots bots size one to start with for dd2 and when she grew out of those at 4-5 months I put her in the MEOS along with dd1! We’ve fopund (even before using cloth) that dd2 is really susceptible to thrush rash so I have to make sure I was the nappies at 70 each wash sadly because they’re being shared but you can do them at a much lower temp - although I read somewhere that you should do them at a higher temp regardless if they’re being shared with a sibling!
I have about 40-45 I think and wash when ever the two buckets get full - that’s usually about every 3 days and that gives me enough still clean to get the wet ones dry! As for wraps I use the motherease airflow wraps and change them once a day unless they’re soiled with poo! Have a chat with your local council as they often have nappy buckets on trial with a variety of different nappies in, it helped us to physically see a good range and therefore get a feel of which would work for us! I’ve also picked up a lot of nappies from them too - 2 carrier bags of tots bots and about 15 MEOS that people had donated in after they were finished with them so they might have a similar pass it on scheme too!
(And yes, there’s something lovely about a washing line full of nappies! I can’t wait to add our totsbots ones to all the MEOS on the line, lol!)
p.s Tea Tree oil is essential as far as I’m concerned - a few drops n the soap compartment before you wash. I also used to drop some tea tree into the nappy buckets whilst waiting to be washed. X

I couldn’t agree more! Terry squares are unbeatable in every way. I like bamboo terry best as it’s super absorbent so slimmer fitting than cotton terry. But they are the best - fit from birth to potty, double up for overnight, and wash and dry superbly - by far the easiest to launder. And they are so economical to buy as well. Best of all with wool nappy covers, which you can even knot yourself if you know how! Much nicer than PUL wraps or plastic pants, as they are so breathable and gentle on the skin. I’m addicted to wool!

no, Jamie is not potty trained and is not showing any sign of being ready for it (he has got lax muscle tone though so is only walking since 6 months and his coordination isn´t too great yet)..
That really helps, I don´t think I can convince Ben to buy them now as we just simplydon´t know if I do get pregnant or if everything goes alright…
But will definitely be going for motherease ones after reading lots about them!
Thank you
Kimmy x
Just to throw a spanner in the works….sorry! I had the onelife birth to potty nappies (exactly the same as motherease) and my little girl grew out of them at 18 months. She was tall and very chubby. On the other hand they were bomb proof and in fab condition when I finished with them and it made me potty train her which for us went really smoothly.
I love terry squares. I used them for the first few weeks. I would always recommend nappy nippas over pins and the mother-ease airflow wraps fit perfectly over them. I love the big round angel bums that babies have in terry’s or the bulkier motherase nappies. So cuddly! I even used some terry squares that my mum used for me and my two younger sibs. My other half now takes them to the gym with him.
I am a big fan of bumGenius for convenience and they do seem to fit most babies from around 18 months. On a budget I would go for the bumGenius Flip nappies with microfibre inserts.
I need to sell my onelife nappies. If you are interested give me a shout.

I bought 5 of these that were brand new and unused from our local second hand children’s clothes/toys/nappies shop and they are massively smaller than motherease, no way they are proper birth to potty! They didn’t go anywhere near doing up on dd1 when we first tried them (just turned 2!), I definitely had the same experience with onelife!
Another thing to bear in mind is that nappies are rarely, if ever, sold as “birth to potty”. They are usually described as “Onesize”, and unless you have a small, early trainer, few actually fit through to potty training, and they are all somewhat bulky on new borns.
Thanks for the feedback re onelife. I will have to measure them up against some mother-ease. I definately didn’t think the wrap quality was a patch on mother-ease.
I think the bumGenius version 4 are birth to potty. I’m sure my daughter now 3.5 would fit in them. I will have to try it and take a photo! They are slightly bigger than version 3.0. Bambinex nappies are def. birth to potty too as it just a size two nappy with poppers down the front. This is all banking on your baby being at least 7lb/8lbs when they are born.
Just need to pursade lucy to try on some nappies now…...!
Grace potty trained herself before she was two, but she was definetly out of Bambinex before that - about 18 months I think. Good rise, but so slim fitting as to be effectively a thong on toddlers - and I have a very slim girl. I loved my Bambinex, but they definetly wouldn’t have lasted for a 3yr old in nappies (or even a two yr old in our case).
If you were wanting to use terries from newborn, you could always use muslin cloths, i mean you will find use for them after they aren’t absorbent enough anymore.
I didn’t use cloth from birth :( but my brother has on my niece and she uses muslins easy peasy - although they pad fold as they don’t like the nippas. They aren’t quite so bulky.
The Gen-Y wraps are really fab for terries too, as they are quite low on the leg, so they are brilliant for containment and coverage of the terry
