I am new to this forum.

My youngest daughter is 1 and until now have been using bambo nature disposable nappies that are biodegradable.  But I am really interested in trying real nappies.  I have looked at websites to try and fatham out what I actually need to buy, but found it a bit confusing.

Any help would be grately appreciated. smile

Try your local freecycle - even lower impact, as they are not being bought new, plus you can get a few 'samples' and have a go (passing on ones which dont suit) till you find 'super nappy'.

Link for finding local freecycle gorup is : http://www.freecycle.org/group/UK/?noautodetect=1

There are lots of sorts to suit everyone, the best website would be http://www.thenappylady.co.uk (google if that's not exact address!) she has a questionnaire on there and then gives you advice based on that.

Have a chat with a nappy advisor. We have a free online independent advisory service, where you can get advice through an email chat session, but you may be able to find a nappy advisor who lives near you and can advise and show you some nappies. If you can find an independent one they will have access to more nappies, including WHAM nappies, but anyone who can come and show you nappies will be helpful, and will be able to chat to you an advise which would be the best ones for you in your particular circumstances

A good nappy to start with, which seems to be liked by the majority of cloth users is tots-bots, but I wouldnt buy lots of one nappy at first - try several out to see what suits your child.  One nappy that one person loves may not suit your baby.  I've even found something that was great on one of my children, didnt work so well on another.  I think one of the problems is a mum will go out and spend a huge amount of money on a nappy system only to find it doesnt work for her child and then declares that cloth is rubbish.

I think that there are some useful threads on this forum that would be good for you to read through when you get time Anno.  i know that the administrator had a bit of a clear out of old posts a we while ago, but this topic comes up a fair bit.
Good for you though, and welcome to the forum.

Have bought and sold alot of my nappies on second hand sites so that cost has been kept down.

usednappies.co.uk and thenappysite have both been great!

Good luck with your search.

See if anyone cloth nappies at your local playgroup too - a local mum would be a new found friend as well as a source of advice!

Hello,
bit late barging in here sorry smile

All you need to nappy is an absorbent bit of nappy and a waterproof layer to protect clothing/ bedding etc. That's basically it. Anything else you can play with later on smile
We realised this early on and have stuck to it since and this is why our nappy sets are nappy and wraps not nappies, wraps, liners, boosters etc.

It's easy once you know what you're wanting to use. smile

Good luck

I don't know about anyone else but I found the cheapest way of buying nappies, (and easiest ones to put on as my husband is disabled and has problems with co-ordination) are all in one nappies - nappies with the nappy and wrap altogether and we have velcro closing nappies.

And I always buy onesize nappies - these normally have several lots of poppers so they grow with your baby and you don't have to buy several sizes which when I was working out cost seemed expensive to have to buy two or three sizes of nappy.
I think more green as well as you only buy one lot of nappies, but appreciate other peoples views as nappy buying can become contagious and it is very personal.

However I did make a mistake and buy a bamboo nappy recently and they take ages to dry, might just be the brand (snugglebums)

I use bumgenius all in one onesize nappies and a fleece liner with a prefold as a booster for nightime.
For change times I use fleece and terry washable wipes that get washed with the nappies and a water spray with lavender oil.

I have to agree that thenappylady is the best place to start, also do you have a local nappucinos so you can see different types of nappy.
Hope this helps,
sarie

I agree about the all in ones - we do almost exactly same as you Sarie.  Great for Grandma and nursery too.
