Hypo’s can def contribute to fitting.  We’ve been spared that so far with Benedict who has type one but he’s been close to the wire on several occasions.  As a child I had two seizures as a result of very high temps and acute tonsillitis.  I also have a friend who’s son started with absences ( mild attacks) and then leading to one full seizure around the age of seven.  Since then nothing… he’s now a fit and healthy eighteen year old.  My DH also had a full tonic clonic seizure six years ago, unable to drive for a year but no further occurrences.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that, sometimes these things really are unexplainable… little one’s second attack could quite easily have been the fall out from the first.  Her brain and body would have experienced such a shock.

I also wanted to send you a cyber hug of reassurance.  It is incredibly hard to see your wee one’s suffer, but kids really are remarkable in these circumstances.  They bounce back and continue to get on with and enjoy life.

with hugs and a prayer that all will be well

It sounds like a febrile convulsion to me, especially as it has occurred along with a raised temperature and an infection.  My brother used to suffer with these between the ages of 2 and 4 years old and my mum recalled being terrified.  Try not to worry too much hon, at least they’ve let your LO home, which has got to be a positive sign.

Thank you all - we got through the night ok, even managed to sleep a little!

I know it’s a great sign that we’re at home and that she hasn’t fitted again. She didn’t have a high temperature, which was what worried the doctors, as febrile fits are usually the result of a temp. However, she did have a bug and the house was very hot. The second fit is more scary as it just shouldn’t have happened - her stats had just improved, blood sugar risen and no temperature at all - the fact that she had a second one means she’s considered to be much more unusual, which is scary. The nurses were all telling us not to panic after the first and then she had the second and they all panicked, raced her into resuss, gave her oxygen and put in a canula so that was pretty traumatic! We have to call 999 again if it happens again, which doesn’t tally with not panicking, in my books!

Palemintmummy, that’s really reassuring to hear, thank you so much. Joxy, you’re right, I mustn’t try to diagnose things myself. The scariest thing of all though was the doctor casually saying she’d be booking an EEG to rule out the possibility of ‘a small tumour in her brain’ - I don’t think any parent could relax after hearing that! That should happen in the next couple of weeks so hopefully that’ll be ok and I’ll be able to relax a bit after that.

Thank you all for your support,

Claire xxx

Ooh sorry Claire, I had missed the part that said your LO DIDN’T have a temperature, nor did I realise the doctor had mentioned ruling out a tumour.  I know it is difficult, but please try not to worry about what the doctor has said, whenever a child has a fit they will always consider looking at any possible neurological issues as fits are oftern a presenting symptom of them.  If your child had very low sugar levels, fits can occur due to hypoglyceamia, my mum was diabetic and I witnessed quite a few of these.  make sure they rule diabetes out, it can start very suddenly in children with quite severe symptoms.  I really hope this is an isolated incident and your LO can return to good health.

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas. xx.

Claire,

How is she now?  I hope everything has settled down, and no more fits, and I hope your anxiety about it all is abating.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

Thank you for asking smile

She seems fine in herself and is walking and talking more every day so she doesn’t seem to have anything major wrong - she has to have an EEG brain scan next week but the doctor said she thinks it’ll be clear. The doctor also phoned to say she was booking an MRI at the same time just in case, but as dh decided to ‘handle it’ and not let me speak to her, I have no idea why as they’d agreed not to initially unless further tests indicated it as she’d need a general anaesthetic, apparently. We haven’t had an appointment through, so hopefully they’ll only do it if the EEG raises concerns.

I managed to let her sleep in our bed on her own for a couple of hours last night as she was so tired and I knew she’d get better sleep than if I was holding her, but I did have to check on her every few minutes!

Hope all is well with you,

Claire xx

Just seen this, and wanted to add my tuppence-worth. My DD had her first febrile convulsion when she was 18 months old. It was terrifying - she suddenly keeled over & started twitching. She’s had a couple since, but is now 6 and seems to have grown out of them (they normally do by the age of about 5). The most helpful thing I was told was that a ‘high’ temperature varies from child to child. Her fitting temperature was 38.2, which isn’t usually regarded as very high. I questioned the paramedic who came the first time and she said that that’s definitely high enough to cause a fit. So you may need to readjust your idea of what is a high temperature for your child, so that you can work on keeping her below that. I find calpol is very effective at keeping her temperature down. When she was younger, if I thought she was getting warm I’d use a thermometer & if it agreed I’d dose her. She had her second fit after I’d dosed her, but the paramedic said it would have been worse if I hadn’t dosed her. I almost never use nurofen because she has respiratory issues. We’ve got an amazing homeopath, who’s done a lot to keep DD well, so I hope yours can help you.

Good luck.

Hiya my middle daughter beth has seizures brought on by fear.  shes had them since she was two she goes out cold and her heart stops beating for a moment.  I try to remain as calm with her as posible her triggers are plaster, doctors and hospitals.  If she falls over and gets herself worked up she can have one then for instance.  I had then as a child as did my dad and were ok.  It took me until the age of 25 and having 2 kids by section to overcome them x

We just had another scary weekend but no fits - she had a throat infection and her temp was crazy - 40-41 degrees for 36 hours and then 35 for a couple of hours - I’ve never felt so clueless as a parent!! Seems odd to me that she didn’t fit but I guess last time she may have had a temp spike that we didn’t notice, combined with the low blood sugar… although she definitely had no temp before the second fit but the consultant has agreed that that one could have just been fall-out from the first. Another app on fri and seeing homeopath on sat so hopefully that’ll be helpful.

Sorry for rubbish typing - she’s asleep on my best typing hand, won’t let me put her down atm! xxx
