Well it appears I am officially building a yarn stash as I pick a bit of this and a bit of that and a bin bag full from a freecycler etc….and all of a sudden I have a bin bag in the cellar, a hold all under the bed, a large plastic bag propped up again DHs drawers (which he keeps impatiently shoving out of the way) a couple of bags in the wardrobe and a bag propped on my ‘dressing table’......
Things need to change! I need to organise this so I can find things and so it is clean and not damp (needs to come out of cellar)

What type of storage works for you? What would be your dream?

Ideally I’d love 2 of these units:  http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00208646/  with clear plastic boxes to store my stash in.

In reality its spilling out of bags and boxes all over my bedroom floor.  I tend to use large cloth bags and hang them from the end of the bed, door knobs, etc.
I did clear my shelves at one point to stack the yarn on them, but whenever I tried to get a ball of something, large amounts of it would fall down, hence changing to bags.

But yes, the above is my dream… which, fingers crossed, isn’t that far away…...

I have boxes underneath side tables, and a pile of bags behind ‘my’ chair…. But my resolution for this year is to use up most / a lot of my stash before I get to buy more yarn. Thank goodness my friend fell pregnant, so I had to buy some to make a snuggle sack for the little one. I just had to, honest!  wink

I love my yarn stash and so it has the space it deserves wink
Actually it used to be piled everywhere but DH got fed up of it and so he sorted out storage for me….
So, my yarn is sorted into weights and then subsorted into fibres before being stored in those cardboard boxes you get from Ikea, or shoeboxes if large enough. The boxes are then stored in various places. DH bought us a lovely big sideboard, it’s about 6’ I think, and that holds most of my DK’s, plus the little drawers hold my tools. That wasn’t enough so DH then acquired an old fashioned writing bureau, you know the kind with the dropleaf writing shelf and cupboards below? Well that contains my finer yarns/laceweights/sock yarns etc. It has a lovely wide shelf that stores all my luxury sock yarns all side by side smile. That still isn’t enough though so I also have two wicker crates that contain my bulkier yarns, chunky/aran/superchunky’s. Because I don’t like to use plastic crates/bags etc I keep lavender sachets in all the drawers/cupboards/crates to deter moths. Fortunately our living room is a great size so all my yarn storage is in there, so much easier to get to. Now all I need is the motivation to actually use the stash, I’m in a creative lull at present.
Now it was just actual yarn storage you were asking about? Because fabrics/fleeces/fibres etc are another post altogether…...

Mamame, your yarn stash sounds glorious!

I have a few old suitcases in the loft for fabric and yarn.  I find this is a really good way of keeping it dust free and kept out of the way.  Not all mine is properly sorted yet, but old suitcases seem one of the best methods.  I’ve tried boxes but find that they end up in a bit of a heap.  With a suitcase you can just do a couple of layers and always see what you’ve got.  Plus, suitcases are fairly cheap at car boot sales.

The Ikea cardboard boxes would be my second choice.  I have those for old magazines.

Mine is on show here, there and everywhere ... colourful and longing to be squished LOL
Like Mamame, I won’t even start on the fleeces and fibres wink

Not much help really, working my way through some of it and going to definitely offload the yarns I have that I am never going to use this year. I gave a Huge bag of mixed stuff to school last year, maybe they’ll be getting another one soon.

I love these ideas - lovely yarn should be on display like art!

Huge sigh of relief, as I thought I was the only one with bags everywhere! I never hide clothes that I’ve brought from DH, but I do hide wool wink I’m in denial about how much I have. most of mine is in under the bed storage thingies and a blanket box and a small bag by the couch for current projects. Don’t get me started on where I keep fabric though…..
