The theme for my next book group meeting is ‘Queens’. I had a look round the bookshop yesterday but nothing grabbed me really. This is the email that arrived today, wonder if anyone could recommend anything? I dont really like classics and the Andrew Marr non fiction looked hard work!

the theme of books is ‘Queens’ to go along with the Diamond Jubilee. So you can read any title, fact or fiction, queens past or present, and tell everyone about it.

I like book groups because I have enjoyed things I would never have thought of picking up, but not sure Im going to be inspired by ‘queens’. I need a book group for people who didnt love English and History at school!

One of my favourite historical novels is Katherine by Anya Seton.  It might be stretching it a bit for your queen theme as she was not actually a queen,  She was the mistress then wife to John of Gaunt (younger brother of The Black Prince).  Her children became the Tudor Kings of England.

I don’t know if it’s too lighthearted for what you’re looking for, but Sue Townsends - The Queen and I immediately sprang to mind! smile

Anything by Phillipa Gregory! Reads like a romance / intrigue / gripping drama, but is historically accurate.

Have fun choosing!
