I couldn’t imagine only having one sling… I have different ones for different situations (ring sling for quick in and out, mei-tai for longer journeys on front, Patapum for walks in woods on back, woven wrap is my new one and may replace the mei-tai). I liked a Kari-me for newborn to 5 months or so (stretchy so when baby gets too heavy they bounce too much!).
There are many slings that go from birth to toddler- woven wraps have many ways to tie to suit different ages/positons: mei-tai but not ideal for tiny newborn IMO; Ergo with newborn insert; ring sling but not ideal for heavy baby/toddler for long periods.
Is this for you? do you have any preferences for buckles or tying, light weight/portable/foldable…? Best to find some to try out… but lots of advise should follow from the experienced lot here!

I found a Moby stretchy wrap brilliant and have just got a woven one for my 8 month old for more support. Also looking into mei-tais for quicker in and out! Joey mei tais look good as they’re padded on the shoulders.

If I absolutely had to choose one, to last birth to toddler, it would be a woven wrap. One of the thick, forgiving ones like a didymos.

Ideally, I would find a way to have a ring sling and stretchy-wrap for a newborn and then a woven wrap and mei-tai once they get older. I used the ring sling with DS as a little baby, then not so much as an older baby, then it came into it’s own again when he was a toddler and kept wanting up and down. Ring slings are pretty easy to make, or cheap to buy from a WAHM. Meitais are fairly cheap from WAHMs too - Etsy has some reasonably priced ones. For stretchy wraps, I had a Kari-me and it was fab, but Moby does some very pretty ones smile

We have a Didymos and a Storchenwiege—both woven wraps—and have used both from the time DD was a newborn until now (she’ll be three in a couple of months and still goes in the sling every night for her pre-bedtime walk with DH).  They’re still in perfect condition, and great for long walks.  It’s true, though, that a ring sling would be easier for the constant climbing in and out that toddlers sometimes want to do.  It hasn’t really been a problem with DD because once she’s in the sling she’s in cosy mode and rarely wants to climb out (even when the walk is over!).  But we might get a ring sling for the next baby if we can find a reasonably priced one; we had this thing called a Tonga (a bit like a ring sling but narrower) for arms-free short spells of carrying (like when you’re out and about in town and your toddler wants to be carried just a few steps) but it turned out to be difficult to adjust and wretchedly uncomfortable when worn for more than 2 minutes.

If I had to choose one it would be a woven wrap. I have an ellaroo and a girasol. Girasol is my fave. Stretchy wraps are great for newborns but depending on how heavy your baby is it might not last you past two or three months. I also want to add that ergo doesn’t work for everyone. Gave me sciatic pain and so I have a beco butterfly which I love from about 6 months. smile
If youcan get to a slingmeet it’s great to try before you buy smile

I used a ring sling from birth, mine is a huggababy, it has padding on the shoulder part and a bit round where your baby sits.  I also have a woven wrap which was like an ellaroo but was homemade.  I bought it on the net.  I still use both on the odd occasion that my youngest wants to be carried.

I have used a connecta from birth and it’s fantastic. Never tried a woven wrap as happy with the connecta, although used a stretchy for a bit with DS, but Connecta was brilliant for us and still carry DS who is 4 occasionally! Also have a patapum toddler version which gets used by DH occasionally. smile

I love my Connecta, so easy in and out especially with other children around and I loved that ds could go in from birth (he went in on his first day on this Earth) but also Alice could go in it, to be honest Alice would easily still go in it and she has just turned although she is a skinny thing wink

You can also breastfeed on the go in a Connecta by loosening the straps and lowering mouth to nipple height, then when finished and sleepy just tighten up straps. It’s very comfy way of feeding and helped with our difficult feeding start with ds, also reduced excess gulping and wind when he was upright smile

Hope you find something that is right for you x
Exciting times xx
