A few weeks ago, I saw a rat in our compost bin.  No real surprise, we live in a city, rats are around.  I checked the area and gave the bin a good kick next time to see if they were living there, but nothing moved so I assumed it was a one off visitor.

I’ve just been out there again and there is rat poo all over the compost.  Now, in some ways this is encouraging.  Rats, for all their dirty reputation, actually like to be fairly clean.  They don’t poo in their nests.  But they like to nest close to their toilet (don’t we all!).

Has anyone had this and how did you deal with it?  We’re still trying to get rid of mice in our house, I really don’t want rats too!  I’m very happy to kill the buggers (sorry if you are more sensitive to them than me.  I’ve had to face down a cornered rat before, they can be rather nasty).  My first plan is to move the compost bin (those plastic ones) and bury the bottoms in the ground a little to make it more difficult to get into.  Any other suggestions?

Oh no!we had this problem, but there was hundreds of baby ones everywhere.regrettably we got rid of the compost bin in the end as we couldn’t get rid.we live on an old farmhouse with out buildings etc.but I think digging it in again may be a good idea 2 try.you can get some “poison “i which is only harmful 2 rodents as swells in their stomach safe for dogs and kids.x

How do they get in, that would be my first thought if you can stop them getting in maybe they will move premises wink  and sorry if this is a silly question but do you put anything in that you shouldn’t i.e cooked food, dairy etc if all else fails, i’m sorry to say i’d kill them too but probably with traps rather than poison.
