Making training pants?

Hi all, I’m in the process of potty training my 2.5 year old boy, and have been looking at getting some training pants for him, but being frugal (borderline tight) I’m less then keen on buying them, and I am relatively nifty with a sewing machine so was thinking of trying to make some. Has anyone else had any success with this, and if so how did you go about it?

Many thanks,

Karin

Don’t mean to interrupt - but what are training pants? Are they just regular pants, or do they have light boosting in like a pull-up nappy?

Yes, I mean the padded things. They aren’t as absorbent as a nappy, so they feel when they are wet, but stops puddles on the floor!

Even more frugal- do you really need them? I potty trained my boys without, if puddles are a problem can you stay outdoor as much as possible, or he could wear jogging trousers (absorbent!)? I always did bare bottom half for the first few days and then introduced pants/trousers as they progressed. I did buy secondhand training pants but never used them (sold them on), they are not absorbent enough to make much of a difference, and proper big boy pants were a good incentive anyway.

I second the not bothering. I bought some and they were crinkly not like pants yet didn’t adbsorb anywhere near enough to stop puddles so didn’t bother after that. And she was less likely to make it to the potty with them on!! We did bare bott as much as possible then nappies for car/toddler group etc.

Yes, you might be right of course, I was given some for my older boy, but to be honest now I think about it, I don’t really think I used them that much, thanks, saved me an unnecessary bother.

Thirded, for what it’s worth. We had some, but they didn’t hold a whole wee, and she was more likely to have accidents with them on. We went for dresses/long shirts, bare bottom and plenty of potties dotted around!
