Check out if you have a Guild of Weavers, spinners and dyers near youm and try and get along to a meeting.  Nothing like watching someone do it to get it to click.  Or they may know of a spinner near you who could offer some coaching.

World of wool to great lap waste bags for about £8.  Wonderful stuff to practice with, although I find I need to recard it after it has been compressed in the bags, so either a pet comb or treat yourself to some hand carders.

But most of all, practice.  You will get some interesting yarn to start with but things will improve.
