Does anyone have a really good (pref quite comprehensive) Greek myths book for children? I basically would like Robert Graves but aimed at the under 10’s…

Len has been listening to me re-telling them from the Graves books, but I tend to meander off too much and she looses interest!

Yikes that brought back a scary memory of a Myths and Legends book I had as a kid, it was supposed to be for children but had absolutely terrifying pictures in it! On the back there was a big picture of hairy giant Cyclops dangling a man into his mouth, and on the front was a lion with a dragon’s head spewing fire or something. One evening when I was about seven my older sister said she had opened the book at a random page and set it down by my bed, I was too scared to leave my bed until she had removed it because I thought I was going to step on a horrific picture of Medusa or the Minotaur. Be careful what you choose with young children wink

Atticus the Storyteller’s Hundred Greek Myths is excellent. It’s a bit gory (the Greek myths are!) but my DD who’s 6 absolutely loves it, and has done for over a year. I’m a Classicist so quite picky about these things, and I think it’s a really good retelling. It tells all the main stories, about Heracles & Odysseus etc., and manages to get round the sex & violence in a way which is appropriate for small children.

I would second Atticus the Greek storyteller book.  I got a copy from the library and then bought our own from Amazon as it was so good.  I read them with dd when she was 5 or 6 and she loved them.  Very well told, age appropriate, but not dumbed down.  It was a book that I loved reading to her.

Just seen this thread and am now going a shopping on Amazon for Atticus, I see there is an audio version too! DS is doing Greek Myths and I bought http://www.amazon.co.uk/Usborne-Book-Greek-Myths-Legends/dp/0746089317/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b we have been reading together everyday, very wordy but superb info at the back with maps and snippets of info.  I am enjoying reading it!
There are some online ones for children on you tube too, portrayed as cartoons - have a look smile

Elderflowery! Thank you. I didn’t know there was an audio version of Atticus. I bought it in my local bookshop & thus didn’t see the audio. DD gets carsick if she tries to read, so that might just be incredibly useful. I shall go and hunt for it now.
