Hello, just reading through all the titles of the posts on here is slightly daunting… I realise there’s huge world of cloth nappying I need to get my head around.  I want to start EC, in fact I have started in a small way.  But I’m also ready to invest in some cloth nappies to bridge the gaps, Vince is still only 9 weeks so I think it’ll be a while before we’re able to go nappy free.

Where on earh do I begin?!  And if you could give me one tip or one piece of advice about using cloth nappies what would it be?

Thank you smile

Try a few different ones what suited J doesn’t suit G, especially as he is older now and bigger than J at this age so now they chaffe his legs :( I found the Kittykins website really helpful for information.

I started by reading the nappylady’s website. She explains everything really well, and I just needed telling really what to buy! Then I thought I’d try a few different things. We were already using cheekywipes (washable wipes), so to set us up, I got:
A nappy bucket with lockable lid, where we dry pail the nappies (no soaking). I got a totsbots bucket off amazon. About 16L I think.
2 mesh laundry bags to line the nappy bucket.
A pack of ten bamboo terry squares in the larger size (I think that is 60x60cm)...by the way major mummy brain, I was actually just scanning the keyboard for a multiplication symbol, thinking oh no I don’t seem to have one!!?
A nappy nippa for the terry squares (like a newfangled version of the safety pin!)
A starter pack of 5 totsbots bamboozle stretch nappies. These need a waterproof wrap over them, as do the terry squares, so I bought 2 motherease wraps, and the starter pack actually included an additional free totsbots waterproof wrap. With more solid poo I’ve found 3 wraps is fine and I’ve never ran out, but with a smaller baby you will probably need more, if you use nappies that require a waterproof wrap over the top.
Then I bought about 5 or 6 other random pocket and all-in-one nappies, dottybots, fuzzibunz elite and totsbots easyfit. None of these however work as well for my son as the terries and shaped nappies that go under the wrap (2-part systems). If you go to the nappy lady website she explains what all the different nappies are and how to use them, I found it all clear and easy to read by clicking on the different topics.

Lastly I bought a selection of boosters to pop into the nappies, I’ve found bamboo and minky ones the best.
And then some liners to catch the poop, you can use flushable ones, or fleece ones that you wash and re-use. I use fleece most of the time now, but have a roll of flushable ones too.

Every couple of days I do a full 60 degree wash with the nappies (and sling some towels in there too if there is room), and then hang them to dry. Easy smile

Hi,

I went through the same thing with our LO and asked on here and got some excellent answers - here’s the thread:

When I bought my cloth nappies eight years ago there wasn’t the choice that there is now.  I went for flat nappies ( need to be folded to right shape) with an outer, there were four sizes in the pack I bought it was from birth to potty.  It seemed like a lot of money to spend but they were worn by two children so it was money well spent.  The set came with one lidded bucket too.  The company who made these is not longer operating, sadly, as they were really good quality.  I have supplemeitem with other bits especially the bigger sizes as I did not get as many of those in my pack but they were not as good as the original ones.

I wish I had had the opportunity to try different ones out before I bought, real nappy week in my area (april time) is a good time to find these for free.  Alternatively you might find someone locally doing this.  Some companies will send you a sample pack which will allow you to try them out before investing in specific nappies.  My local council is quite switched on and gives out details of local companies who can help you.

Good luck, it is a bit of a minefield!

Our local children’s centre has a nappy library where you can borrow a bucket of nappies for a small fee. They have a selection of different types so you can try before you buy.  We are finding just cotton booster pads from Ebay in a velcro bambino mio/tots bots or little lamb wrap are fine for now (ds2 is only 10 weeks) but I guess soon he will need more than a booster so we also have tots bots and little lamb shaped nappies which fit him fine when we’ve tried them. I also use fleece liners which are fantastic and keeping his skin dry. We bought ours from an Ebay shop but its easy to just cut your own from a piece of fleece.

My one tip is to not buy liners - seriously, 1/2 metre of fleece will more than cover it - just cut out rectangles.

We have a selection of shaped nappies - bambinex, little lambs, tots bots, motherease sandies and one life, and I’m also getting in to fuzzi-bunz pockets, with a couple of boosters in or a pre-fold in. All are fine - bambinex are very slimline, but other than that I don’t see much difference. My main thing is using fleece wraps - I find that they chaff less than PUL. I gather that wool wraps are pretty good too, but I don’t fancy the washing - Jude always leaks poo onto the wrap, and fleece can just be chucked in the wash, and dries really fast.

I can send you some Swaddlebees if you like. I have some Fuzzy buns pockets too and possibly some Tots Bots Bamboozles but I can’t remember what I did with them to be sure.

That would be great thank you, I’m not finding the time to do the research at the moment - i was just going to trawl ebay and buy singles of all the different varieties.  I’ve just bought one Tots Bots size 2!  Thats as far as I’ve got lol!!

I’ll fb you my new address xxx

Thanks to everyone for all your replies and advice, I’ll be looking back over this thread as I progress and it all starts sinking in! x

I can send you some swaddlebees fleece wraps in various sizes for postage if you want them - they never fit my very skinny babies very well.

Angie thats very kind, thank you.  I’ve still not managed to do a lot of research although yesterday I ordered a couple of Itty Bitty Tuttos as a friend also with a chubby baby highly recommended them.  I just need to get started I think and build up my confidence and get to know what its all about.
