Being a bit impulsive I have already ordered Relax kids the wishing star for DD and DS then thought I should have asked for recommendations on here first!

Anyway was just wondering if others use this to help their wee ones meditate and how you find it? Any other tips and advice around meditation would also be welcome. Both DH and myself meditate and I would like to get DD and DS into it sooner rather than later as I feel it is a very good coping tool.

I’d be really interested in this, I agree its a great coping tool, I have meditated for years and think my kids would benefit from it too but I’m somehow not really sure how to get them started. My oldest in particular has a strong temper and I’ve been thinking this might really help him. I’ve looked at various books and cds in the past but have been a bit put off because we are very much not religious.

My kids are a little older-8, 7 and 4-so any recommendations for this age would be great.

We use the relax kids and calm kids cds too- relax kids are the best by far. They have various age ranges I’ve known children of 7 or 8 using some. They’re very engaging for children and my daughter listens intently. We try to have one on each morning to set a calm tone to the day though sometimes it works better mid-late afternoon. Sometimes I will use just a quiet cd and ask her to be still and we’ll ‘meditate’ that way- I’m not sure how much meditating is going on but she almost always stays still and breathes deeply so is relaxing on some level. We’re not religious either and wouldn’t want to use a meditation cd for my daughter with religious undercurrents- relax kids are not on my experience related to any religion nor mention any religious things. Just peace.

The wishing star book is lovely - I must remember to use it more often! It has loads of short meditations and the pictures are beautiful to help the littlies choose which one they’d like to hear. I hadn’t thought to try meditation with DD1 during the day - we’ve only done it at bedtime but I will have to have a go. I love hearing DD1 doing all of the deep breathing - it’s very sweet and definitely seems to help her unwind. The Calm Kids cd’s are lovely too. None are remotely religious.

I would love to start meditating again - how do you all fit it in around children? It doesn’t help that I didn’t have a ‘routine’ firmly established before DD2 was born (13 weeks ago) so I slipped out of it easily and am finding it hard to get back to… Maybe I’ll try the relax kids cd’s when I have a bit more cash (so that may be a very long time lol!) Gem - is there one you’d particularly recommend?

We love the Relax Kids “Shining Stars” which suits my 4 and 7 year old perfectly.  It has a series of relaxing meditations and little songs, all about peace, light and stars sort of thing.  It is for anyone of any faith (or none), I think some of them mention “angels” maybe, I could check that if you wanted but it certainly isn’t within a religious context.  I really love them, it helps me relax too and their CDs are just perfect for sending them off to sleep.

Relax kids-quiet spaces is the one we use the most. There are various meditations on there from imaginary peace bubbles to stretching yourself like an elastic band. My daughter is coming up to three and loves these. I’ve seen some that are quite ‘girly’ that I’m thinking of getting for her birthday- I think there’s one about fairies and mermaids or something! I like to meditate if I can daily too though it is tough with little ones. I usually spend some time using pregnancy meditation and mantra cds when I’m in the bath or just after but I’m not sure when little one number two comes along how much time I’ll find to meditate alone esprcially in the early weeks. What a pity - it looks like Shining Stars has been discontinued :( I liked the sound of a mixture of meditations and songs - its a bit different. Oh well, Quiet Spaces sounds lovely too!

Wow, thank you everyone for the discussion around this. I am looking forward to getting the book and seeing how we get on so will feed back.

Sal we go to a colleague’s house on a Thursday night for meditation but are lucky as have a my parents and sisters near so they happy to look after DD and DS once a week. My colleague is a buddhist so we use related CDs but I am enjoying learning about the Buddhist aspect as well although it is just the meditation I want to get DS and DD into not the religious side. Both DH and I get a lot from the sessions.

I tried to meditate yesterday in my parents conservatory with the rain falling on it (love that) and DD joined me for a bit but then our pup wound up the other dogs and all was caos again!! Having trouble getting the time to do it in the house.
