hello all, Ds (15 months) is very constipated. His tummy is making all kinds of gurgling noises, and he has been pushing and straining so hard he has been sick twice. He has been sleeping on and off most of the day, and he is refusing his booby, and also water. He fed fine this morning, then had a couple of mouthfuls until teatime, when he took both sides. I have practically been forcing water into him today, and he has also drunk a cup of fennel tea. Since he had the tea he isn’t gurgling so much, but he is still straining every 10 minutes or so, and getting nowhere, and it’s obviously painful for him. I had a quick inspection, and you can practically see the poo, it’s just not coming out :(  Out of desperation I gave him a spoonful of califig, as it was all I had. He is refusing fresh orange :(

Help!

This might sound ridiculous, and not especially natural, but when I (personally, not with the kids) have been in that position, where you can see the poo but it’s just not coming out, I’ve used a bit of lube (we use one called Sylk, which is a natural one, but good old KY would do) to help smooth its path, so to speak. It may be psychological, but it does seem to help it slide out….

Have you tried massaging his tummy? Lie him on his back & gently rub his tummy in big circles clockwise. You can either do it over his clothes or directly on his skin, using olive oil if you like. Apparently it’s really important to go clockwise on the front because of the way the intestines are arranged. I’ve found this very effective with my DD when she’s a bit ‘bunged up’.

If he’ll eat anything, pear is laxative. Maybe stewed & pureed?

Good luck. I hope he feels better soon.

We’ve just been going through a similar thing with our seven month old and my little sis suggested prunes so we whizzed them up added some water and whizzed up peas and this has worked a treat.  We’ve been giving her this (about a teaspoon with her meals for the last two days) and that together with clockwise tummy massage seems to have sorted it.

Have a look at this link, it might help you as well:

Best of luck x

Yes massage as described above but add a drop or two of mandarin essential oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil.
