DD had stubborn cradle cap as a baby and after being unsuccessful with oil/shampoo i read it usually clears of its own accord by age 2 so stopped worrying about it. She is nearly 5 now and it’s still there. It doesn’t stand out because her hair is blond but i can notice it in her parting when she has her hair in bunches.

Any ideas of what i can do to get rid of it once and for all? Can i use anti dandruff shampoo on a 4 yr old? I currently use Weleda products on her hair.

Many Thanks

Lisa

When my son was 5 months or so I ended up using Dentinox Cradle Cap shampoo on his head. I tried all the natural stuff first and was reluctant to use it but thought of it as the lesser evil as he was starting to pick at it and it would get a lot worse if infected. Someone gave me the rest of their bottle, and I only had to apply it and rinse it off over 3 nights and it was gone never to return. I don’t know what the difference between dandruff and cradle cap is though and if it would work for a 4 year old. Hopefully someone else can help.

ds1 had this til he was around 5 or 6 and we noticed it was when he wore hats. Like in the summer with a cap or the winter with a woolie hat but not in spring/autumn when we tended to not insist on a hat. We used Dentinox on him til then but ds2 now has it (3.5mths) and we use coconut oil which works a treat (although I see you’ve already tried oils - did you try coconut?).

I put olive oil in my babies hair over night then gently tried to brush out any CC that had loosened then I washed the oil out with Dentinox too, I did this once or twice and the cradle cap went x

All of ours had it to varying degrees. Our oldest I had no idea what to do and then one day my mother was looking after her and when we picked her up my mother had applied olive oil and then physically picked at it. Her hair was a mess, her head looked sore and patchy and she woldn’t let me touch her hair for weeks after. After that we refused to do anything about the other childrens CC. It cleared up of it’s own accord within a couple of years however DS4 is now almost five and it’s only been in the past year that it has considerably reduced to the point where it is now tiny little flakes now and then. DD4 (age 3) has it quite badly still but I don’t touch it as her hair is still quite fine and if you do try to slide a loose bit out then her hair comes too. She can’t wear her fringe back or a parting as it shows up a lot but then she generally wears her hair down so it can’t be seen anyway. I don’t plan on treating it in the next few years at least…..

I’ve tried Dentinox shampoo which had very little effect on it and cradle cap oil which was quite good but now DD’s hair is waist length i think the oil method would be very difficult.
Thank you for your replies so far xx

My DD is 7 in a couple of weeks and still has yellow patches of cradle cap on her head.  I just rub away any loose ones and then leave it.  I’ve been told olive oil works too but like your DD her hair is waist length so not practical.

Sorry, I’m not help but it’s not just your DD who still suffers with it

My 3yo still has lots, I’m happy to leave it be. It doesn’t bother her and making a fuss about it would turn it into an issue.

I picked at it in the early months, and didn’t come back; our son still got a bit left (he’s almost 6 months old); and what remained is the stuff I didn’t get around to pick at. As more hair grown is quite difficult to see it if you don’t look attentively. I’m planning to keep picking at it whenever I get a chance till it goes. I put oil, and then pick; just oil and a comb doesn’t seem to work. It doesn’t seem to bother him at all; for us, was just esthetically not nice, and making his short blonde hair look reddish at times.

Mine all still have it. I was nit combing them today (nice! all clear thankfully now!) and noticed a fair amount of orangey cradle cap in both my 6yo and 4yo’s hair, as well as my 1yo. If you pick it then you can pick the whole hair follicle out so not recommended. I am sure it will clear, but know what you mean as it does looka bit nasty. Lucklily mt DD1 has almost Afro tight curls so it hides it well and DS couldn’t care less wink

I heard this too and that’s why I wasn’t too happy about messing with it. DD1 still has fine thin hair as an adult and I do think it could be down to my mother messing about as all the otherchildren have much thicker hair!
The cradle cap never bothered them but I know having fine/thin hair will lol

DS has it quite badly too, though it doesn’t bother him so we have never really bothered trying to get rid of it, his hair is very thick though so you cant see it. We use olive oil soap as shampoo which I thought might have helped but it hasn’t really, and we did try olive oil once or twice but his hair just ended up in a mess and required washing, which he doesn’t like at the best of times so he wasn’t too impressed wink It will go on its own I am sure x x

We use coconut oil here and works amazing,UAE anyway as a hair conditioner so not as greasy and thick as olive for longer hair,x x

Yes at almost 3 my daughter stil has it. When she was small her cradle cap was very sore and got infected. Is not so bad now and her hair is thicker now so its not so visible but does itch a bit. We tend to leave it and just wash her hair with a chamomile tincture every few days (shes very fair) I wouldnt ever have considered picking it out but thats because it would be difficult to judge how much you are actually pulling out and I imagine is fairly easy to pull too much away too quickly revealing raw skin. Im sure it will clear eventually x

Thank you all so much for your replies, you’ve really put my mind at rest.
Didn’t realise other children had it as well thought it was just my dd, think i’ll just leave it well alone and see what happens over the next couple of years.
