I don’t know about you, but I often worry about the chemicals used when going for a beauty treatments? I find myself considering if it is actually good for me to be having this treatment, taking into account all the toxic preservatives and ingredients used in general beauty products today?

I weighed up the most popular beauty treatments and wondered if there was a way to enjoy a pamper session without the added pressure of drastically adding to your daily chemical intake.

Thankfully, there is a way to experience beauty treatments that are non-toxic and completely safe to the body and will leave you looking fantastic! Here are my top 5 for you to look out for:

1. Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a scalpel to gently remove dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion. It does sound scary, but believe me it isn’t! It eliminates the amount of dead skin cells and also ‘peach fuzz’ facial hair. My skin has never felt so soft! Really the only products needed for this are aftercare products such as a serum or healing balm for any redness like Neal’s Yard Remedies Beauty Balm and a natural SPF to protect the skin for a few days afterwards. Jane Iredale makeup foundations include this or the Green People Day Solution SPF15.

2. The Facial is a necessity, not a luxury if you wish to keep your cells and skin at its best health. Regular facials whether you do them yourself or pay a therapist, increase blood flow and therefore decrease the likelihood of premature wrinkles and fine lines. Even a quick mini massage every day will benefit your complexion no end! But the main point I would like to make is be careful of the products you use as they may dry out the skin and actually negatively affect your skin condition. I would recommend Ila Spa for luxury pamper products or Neal’s Yard Remedies for your specific skin type.

3. Body Massage really follows the same rules as a facial where products and benefits are concerned, to keep the bodily skin cells healthy, supple and toned. Again, I would recommend Ila Spa body products for their deep richness and beyond organic ingredients.

4. For a manicure or pedicure it’s hard to get a pure certified organic and natural nail varnish. But there are some toxic free alternatives out there such as Scotch Natural London and Zoya.

5. Threading is becoming the more common alternative to waxing as it causes fewer traumas to the skin. By using cotton thread a therapist can remove unwanted hair from the lip, chin and brow areas. Again a chemical free product to calm the redness is all that would be needed.

Why not give some of the safer alternative a go next time you’re having a beauty treatment? You could purchase some of the products I recommend and take them with you if your therapist does not have any safe products to use? After all, who is going to take control of our toxic intake we don’t?
