I was just completely fed up with all the unhealthy products being sold to me in the shops. As a parent, it was when my daughter (now 15) was born and I literally could not bear the thought of washing her with the toxic baby products available at the time. Year later, and after a decade of formulation experience, I created Awake Organics (awakeorganics.co.uk) with human and environmental health as the two pillars that would drive everything we create within the brand. I started with Aura Natural Deodorant, a single product that would help women avoid daily exposure to aluminium and parabens.

SELF-CARE SECRETS

I only use waterless products because this ensures that they don’t require a synthetic preservative system, which is not good for my skins’ microbiome. Waterless products tend to be a lot more oily as a result but they are so much more nourishing for the skin. To get the most out of them, I always apply to wet skin or even mix them with a splash of water before applying. This method helps the products go on easier and absorb more deeply.

BUSINESS PLANS

This year Awake Organics has grown much faster than we ever expected. We are now stocked in dozens of independent shops as well as newly launched at Selfridges. With this level of growth we are looking ways to enhance our body care and hair care range, upgrade our plastic free deodorant packaging and continue to expand the brand across the UK.

THREE WAYS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE

Start swapping out synthetic products for healthy and natural alternative options.

Familiarise yourself with ingredients in cosmetics that are harmful to our environment and aquatic systems.

When buying cosmetics products look for packaging that is low impact, reusable, recyclable and hopefully plastic free.
