EVENT Nosing Around
Open House London is perfect nosy parker fodder, as buildings usually shut to the general public throw open their doors and let the rabble in – some with architect-led tours. Go up the Gherkin, peep into The Freemasons Hall, or wander around the Lloyds Building. Newcomers this year include the Old Waiting Room at Peckham Rye Station and the innovative Kitchen on Wheels in Wood Green. Search the Open House Junior website for details of the programme of family friendly activities - explore diggers and trucks and do crafts at Southwark’s recycling facility, make art at the Gibbs Building, or join a Backstage Treasure Hunt at The Queen’s Theatre in Havering. All weekend.

MAKE and DO Go Nuts
Gorgeous, glossy conkers have started falling from the trees. As much as we adore playing the traditional, clonking game, there are many more things you can do with them. There are ten great ideas on our website (try throwing them in a fire or making a good luck charm from yours). There are also some brilliant ideas here – we love the idea of using them as light pulls, as a Vivienne Westwood-style necklace, and to make soap!

LEARN and EVENT Ice Warriors
The UK will be going Scythian crazy this Autumn. As of this weekend, the art, jewellery, fabrics and weapons are on display at the British Museum. Discover more about the nomadic warriors who roamed the plains of Siberia between 900 and 200 BC through their possessions, often found trapped in ancient slabs of ice, that include pieces of tattooed skin, false beards, elaborate headwear shaped like fantastical eagles, and collapsible tables (their possessions had to be small and light to take on the road – a bit like today’s van life fanatics!). Listen to this beginners guide to the Scythians to find out more or head here to learn about their lives .

EVENT Rescue Me
Fire, police, and ambulance-crazy kids will go nee naw over Glasgow Riverside Museum’s Blue Light Festival. Meet emergency services teams, get up close with vehicles both old and new, and enjoy the fairground rides, bungee trampolines, and face painting. It’s free, and on all weekend.

EVENT Our Type
Centred around the gorgeous V&A Museum, the London Design Festival combines installations, art, talks and workshops to celebrate the capital’s position as the design capital of the world. It’s a great opportunity for creative teens and young people to mix with professionals and learn. Customise type to create your own Font Selfie, learn about establishing your brand and get invaluable portfolio and career advice from industry leaders Smaller kids will love Camille Walala’s colourful and immersive Villa Walala in Broadgate, Flynn Talbot’s light experience, Reflection Room, and the circus-inspired craft workshops at Design Circus
