RECIPE Cool and Healthy
Frozen treats don’t have to be laden with sugar and fat. There are some excellent ideas for fruits to freeze and enjoy here, try this awesomely simple chocolate and frozen banana ‘ice cream’ that’s actually pretty healthy and linger over these scrumptious strawberry banana popsicles. Delish!

EVENT, LEARN and MAKE Totally Batty
Watching tiny bats flit across the sky in summer is one of life’s great joys. It’s the International Bat Weekend, so get out into the dusk and see, hear and find out about our leathery winged friends. There are events across the UK; go here to find a batwalk, quiz trail, bat night or craft workshop near you.Find out more about bats here, find out how to encourage them with a bat-friendly garden here, and, if you don’t spot any real-life chiroptera, make your own!

EVENT Toweringly Good
The annual Shuffle Festival uses talent local to Tower Hamlets to celebrate creativity through film, science, performance, food and music. Held mainly at former workhouse, St Clements, and Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, visit the Insect Circus, join in a muddy play workshop, sing at the torch song karaoke, join in kickabouts, join in with paint bombs and potatoes, and try paint catapulting. Lots of messy, proper fun in the heart of London’s East End! All family events are free, otherwise tickets are here

MAKE and DO Action Painting
Get out into your garden or onto your pavement and make some super-messy, large-scale art. Try making spectacular spin paintings with a bike or create tricycle artworks with younger kids. Learn about parabolas while making pendulum paint pictures or get graffitiing with spray paints. Splat painting is fun using either water balloons or a mallet and cottonwool pads, or just go all out with feet painting and body painting. Now we’re craving building an outdoor shower! Here are some tempting ideas

LEARN Messy Maths
Make the most of the tail-end of the summer holiday sunshine and sneak in some gentle learning with these great ideas for outdoor number games. The shell memory game is so visually appealing that kids of all ages will leap at the chance to play, while water balloon basketball is brilliant fun and teaches basic numeracy. These icy numbers will cool down hot hands as well as helping little brains get to grips with counting, and number splash is messy, wet fun!
