US company Orglamix make super-cool, fashion-forward, hand-crafted vegan make-up, skin care products and perfumes that are anything but boring. We’re fans of their glitter, their Voodooo and Halloween perfumes and their beautifully packaged moisturising products, that include the cult salve Coconut Melt. We spoke to founder and CEO Cheri Tracy

“I am married to my high school sweetheart, Steven and we have two girls, 13 and 10. We live in a suburb of Chicago with all of our pets. I launched Orglamix in 2010 on Etsy. After researching ingredients in mainstream cosmetic brands, I was determined to create a better product. I couldn’t believe there are 42 ingredients in the average foundation! I wanted to create a simple, yet effective product with healthy ingredients, and a line that’s good for you and affordable. I wanted to create products for real women, mums, like myself. At the time, the so-called “mineral makeup brands” used some not-sohealthy ingredients like bismuth oxychloride and talc and the natural beauty brands were pretty blah, selling the same, boring shades of eyeshadow. I really wanted to be different. Natural doesn’t have to be boring. I like to think of Orglamix as a natural alternative to MAC Cosmetics. I used to work 80 hours a week when I first started. Today, I’m lucky to have help. It’s a constant struggle to balance everything. I’ve now learned to give myself grace. I will always have a to-do list a mile long, and I’m OK with that. I set goals and work backward so I can track my progress. I schedule everything, including time for family, friends and fun. When it’s busy or we’re working on a big project, one week may be 80% work and 20% family. But then next week, it will flip flop, so it all levels out. I love to work, so I really have to be both time conscious and productive.

My girls help me: from making boxes to labelling products to helping me create new products. My ten year old just went to a book signing for David Ross, a baseball player. She made him a Cubs inspired glitter nail polish for his wife. She came up with the idea and made it all on her own. My other daughter made Unicorn Farts perfumes for her sale at school a few years ago. They are super supportive and my biggest cheerleaders. I personally answer all customer service inquiries. I really get to know our customers, so we can create the best products to meet their needs. All of our products are handcrafted in small batches, so we’re able to launch new products and shades quickly. When you buy from Orglamix, you’re supporting another mum – not some huge company.

Our customers requested glitter. I have fun mixing new shades and coming up with the names. The process often involves a lot of wine! Our glitter names are all based on eighties songs. My favourites are the iridescent mixes. We’ve been experimenting with pressed glitters, which has been a lot of fun. Our Natural Eyeshadow is the first product I launched, so it’s my favourite. We’ve created hundreds of unique colours. We have customers that have every shade we’ve ever created. I really love all the intense, vibrant colours, textures and finishes. They make me happy – especially to see them all lined up together. It’s a rainbow of joy.” orglamix.com
