This week in our project-based, self-directed learning space we're looking at fruit. We're excited to discover that figs were the first ever cultivated food crop and that a pomegranate can hold up to 1000 seeds!

RESOURCES

We’ve planned a trip to the market in town to choose some unusual fruit for the week, which we’ll eat as is, in fruit salad and in smoothies too.

We have a small knife and board to practice cutting and serving own snack. We’ll be squeezing some juice from citrus fruit too.

There’s a strawberry plant, which I’ve brought indoors as part of our fruit display. We’re eagerly watching the fruit change colour!

We made a lemon and nettle cake yesterday at Forest School - check out our Instagram stories for recipe.

On our table we have a lacing apple toy with a green caterpillar that winds his way through the holes - I can’t remember the brand but I love these ones from The WoodPecker Factory on Etsy.

We’re playing with Pop to the Shops and Lunchbox this week - both games from Orchard Toys.

I’m going to make some simple 2D felted fruit. I love these felted ones though from CJCreations on Etsy or these crocheted ones from Rainbow Happiness, also Etsy.

I spotted this wooden strawberry plant recently, available from Kidly and made by Tender Leaf Toys, but I have to resist buying more yummy wooden toys!

As part of a bundle I purchased last month, we have the Strawberry Unit from Mini Nature Explorers - check it out here on Etsy - there’s also a pack about apples, which looks gorgeous too.

BOOKS

Oliver’s Fruit Salad by Vivian French - lovely colourful tale that introduces the tasty possibilities of fresh fruit.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - I love the clever cut outs in this book as the caterpillar eats his way through the week.

Avocado Baby by John Burningham - From one of my favourite children’s authors, the new baby doesn’t seem to want to eat anything. Until he discovers avocadoes – and gets bigger and stronger than anyone could have guessed.

Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg - Total classic of a book from author and illustrator team Janet and Allan Ahlberg - love it!

We Eat Bananas by Katie Abey - A hilarious introduction to lots of different foods. Is that a flamingo munching on a banana? What about that hippo flipping pancakes? And why is that llama dressed as a lemon? There’s even a shark slurping a fruit smoothie.

Baby Goes to Market by Atinuke - Join Baby and his mama at the bustling marketplace for a bright, bouncy story filled with fruits!
