My step-mother introduced me to making skincare products and I was inspired to create my own range to help my daughter’s sensitive skin conditions. Understanding more about the properties of plant oils really spurred me on to formulate creams, balms and oils that have therapeutic value for both the skin and what is underneath.
BEST BEAUTY ADVICE
‘Face oil is the best treatment for oily skin’ - counter-intuitive yes, but rather than stripping the skin of oil and thereby triggering extra production of sebum, go for a face oil containing jojoba oil to balance sebum production. The skin is living tissue; effective, gentle skincare is all about learning how to work with it to get the best out of it.
DESERT ISLAND PRODUCT
Silvan Skincare’s Radiance Balm is a multi-purpose product that can be used as a cleanser, treatment mask and as a moisturiser. I formulated this balm using specific beneficial plant oils: Jojoba to cleanse and balance, rosehip for sun damage, camelia to revitalise, rose geranium for laughter lines and immortelle to support skin regeneration.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BRAND?
We are looking for new shops to add to our list of treasured retailers. We are also approaching practitioners who we hope would like to use the products as part of their treatments.
TAKE ACTION AT HOME
• Multi-purpose products are great shelf savers – for example, lip balm can be used not only to moisturise lips but also elbows, knees, cuticles, to add some gloss to eyelids and lashes and to create a seal over sore skin or eczema.
• Look for the Vegan Society badge; it indicates brands that say no to animal testing as well as providing a guarantee that all ingredients are free from any animal products.
• Ditch disposables; use a cream cleanser with a muslin square to remove and gently exfoliate. Look for products in packaging that can be re-filled, re-used or recycled. Silvan Skincare balms are filled in amber glass pots with aluminium lids #plasticfree.
