He cites several pieces of research on volunteering and health, most notably that written about in the scientific journal Science: “This study concludes that volunteer activities are one of the best guarantees of a longer life. Volunteering may even be a better safeguard than maintaining low blood pressure, keeping down cholesterol or giving up cigarettes. The pleasure of being connected to others, the feeling of involvement in a social group, is a remarkable remedy for the emotional brain and thus for the body as well.”
