Trying to “heal” infertility can be a bit like trying to fix a tree that isn’t flowering by looking at the branches instead of focusing on the roots. Each woman has a unique complex of needs required to bring her into balance. When we haven’t attuned to those needs, the resulting imbalance will contribute to the underlying root cause of infertility. In my holistic fertility practice, I guide women through what I call the 6 Elements of Fruitful Fertility:
The Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of Fertility. Here I’ll share the WHEN with you, as even just that simple shift can encourage significant results.

Western Medicine divides a woman’s reproductive cycle into two phases, the follicular and luteal phases. Traditional Chinese Medicine (my background) divides it into four. Each phase requires different energy, and we can attune to what our body needs.

Blood Phase: Bleeding, approx. days 1-5

Metal Element/ Autumn

Focus on letting go

As we shed our menstrual blood, we envision the trees in the fall, releasing leaves. We recognize and honour the sacredness of our body.

• Twists and gentle exercise.

• Do not use tampons.

• Create ritual around menstruation, honouring the let-go.

• Explore the energetic patterns & emotions that no longer serve.

Yin Phase: Follicular Development, approx. days 6-11

Water Element/Winter

Practice flowing with what is

Rather than trying to force our container or situation to be perfect, we fill up the space we are in with our fullness. We nourish and nurture ourselves. We relax into deep trust in the gestation of the unseen. We focus on cooling, and avoid unnecessary stress.

• Ample rest.

• Yin Yoga, meandering

• Cooling foods like cucumbers

• Nourishing healthy fats

Qi Phase: Ovulation, approx days 12-16

Wood Element/ Spring

Focus on action and movement

We explore any areas in our life in which we may feel “stuck.” We practice feeling strong in our body.

• More rigorous exercise, like vinyasa yoga, hikes

• Enjoy fun, playful, exuberant sex.

• Encourage liver function with greens like arugula and watercress.

Yang Phase: Implantation approx days 17-28

Fire Element/ Summer

Explore Intentional Joy and Warmth

Often known as the 2-week-wait, I encourage my patients to spend this time saying YES to life, perhaps remembering and doing the things they loved as kids. Womb’s warmth is stoked by the fire of the heart. There’s no better way to encourage this than by loving life. Seek happiness.

• Dance. Sing. Run around naked. Paint. Play!

• Warm your womb with herbs like cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, etc… maybe enjoy a
delicious almond milk chai latte every day during this phase.
