How annoyed am I, I picked up vitalite because its suppose to be vegan and it turns out it isn’t (I’m not vegan but my mate is) - and despite having the vegan symbol, the vegan society HAS NOT endorsed this product; at least as of 20th March 09.  However on other forums they are saying it is vegan and diarycrest have confirmed the lactic acid is non animal form and the vitamins are not derived from lanolin.

Still, until the vegan society confirms this I guess be wary of vitalite.

How annoying! Maybe ask your friend what s/he thinks of it and if s/he’s happy to eat it or not?

By the way I always use Pure for my vegan brother.

No she’s not.  She’s the one who told me about the ruckus over vitalite.

Guess i’ll have t get some pure in too then
Very naughty though to label something as vegan and diary free when it isn’t…(or wasn’t)

Hi,

I don’t think it has been Vegan for a while, my mum was using it but stopped last year as she found out it wasn’t vegan. I agree very deceiving saying its dairy free. Oh… I was just about to suggest pure and have just noticed you already know about it.

Mxxxxx

Is it purely the lactic acid and vitamins that are an isue?
I have been buying Vitalite but noticed that recently(last couple of months) it is different, might sound stupid but it doesn’t melt the same on toast and tastes slightly different.  Maybe it’s just me?

Bloody annoying though, I know vegans that are still eating it!

I going to contact Patricia Tricker (vegan soc trustee) about this. I known her for a couple of years know and she’s great if anyone can get to the bottom of this debate she can. I meant to bring it up with her at the weekend but was so busy at the GNVG that I forgot.

Joxy I know what you mean, the vegan/veggie worlds gone quite a twitter over it.

PT came up trumps. She says

“Vitalite is vegan but no longer qualifies to bear our trademark because the company says it is unable to comply with our stricter sourcing criteria.”

Hope this helps.

Thankyou for posting your reply, it has put my mind at rest.

Oh thanks for that Lorna, I’ll let my mate know. smile

I know what you mean about it tassting different though Sarie, I use to really like vitalite but it tastes a bit plasticky to me now and not especially nice on toast - and I remember it being one of the nicer margerines.  Mind, have to say I quite like the Pure stuff and Rye is eating it fine smile

In answer to the original post. I am vegetarian, but my is vegan and after blindly using Vitalite for many years, today I read the ingredients. If there is Palm Oil in the ingredients it can not under any circumstances be Vegan! Do I really need to post the horrific videos of our poor cousin apes and monkeys been slaughtered, some holding their babies? Vegan means no animal is used or harmed in its production. I would suggest we all write to Vitalite to complain and urge them to omit Palm Oil and substitute it with something with no impact on animals. I would pay the extra to see Palm Oil gone forever!

The excuses for Palm Oil at the Vegan Society is very concerning.
