Monkton Wyld Court is a large country house and grounds in an idyllic location in Dorset, offering a variety of courses, venue hire, bed and breakfast, hostel and camping facilities.
As an education centre for sustainable living, Monkton Wyld Court hosts a range of courses, conferences and gatherings for adults, families and children, providing a valued resource for the local community and for people from further afield, including the tired city-dweller seeking the reinvigoration of fresh food and country air. With our eleven acres of gardens and meadows, we are located in a secluded valley within walking distance from Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Dorset’s famous Jurassic coast, so we are the perfect base for seaside holidays.
The Grade II listed Neo-Gothic Court was built in 1848 as a Rectory. In 1940, pioneering educators Carl and Eleanor Urban established a co-educational boarding school here to promote cooperative living and learning. Although the original Monkton Wyld School closed in 1982, the importance of farming and other practical skills and a focus on sustainability have remained central to our ethos. More about Monkton Wyld Court and the History of the Building.
The Court is now run and maintained by a resident community with the help of volunteers. We work to develop and promote a lifestyle based on mutual respect for each other and for the natural environment, and strive to live as sustainably as we can. Decisions are made by consensus, and new community members join through a gradual process that begins with a volunteering visit.
Courses on Low-Impact, Land-Based Skills
From bee-keeping to scything, yoga to hedgelaying and timber building, Monkton’s programme promotes low-impact, land-based skills for changing modern life.
Our seasonal “family weeks” are lively and popular. We also host venue bookings, educational stays and small eco-conferences for schools, informal groups and national environmental organisations.
We offer simple but comfortable rooms at affordable rates, either as bed and breakfast or hostel accommodation. As well as individual rooms, the whole or part of the house can be booked, to sleep up to 43 people. Writer’s retreats are another option, where a room can be occupied for a number of weeks at an economy rate, including meals. Another option is to camp on our old tennis court lawn, with the house facilities nearby.
Meals, all vegetarian, are cooked on a wood-fuelled stove in the Victorian kitchen using fresh organically produced ingredients from the Court’s own walled garden, orchard and dairy farm and from other local producers. We cater for all sorts of special diets on request.
So come as a guest and enjoy the relaxing, friendly surroundings of Monkton Wyld Court, or join us as a volunteer to share closely in our work and way of life. Either way you will experience a different way of 21st century living, one that we believe has a very positive future.
