# Mothers Rise Up

Mothers, children and babies from Mothers Rise Up gathered outside 10 Downing Street onon Tuesday 1 September, bringing a giant melting-planet ice cream to highlight the growing threat extreme heat poses to children and demand urgent government action. The action follows a summer of exceptional heat. June 2026 was England’s hottest June in records dating back to 1884, while this became the first year on record in which the UK reached temperatures of at least 35°C in May, June and July. \[1\]

[**Over 30,000 people have signed Mothers Rise Up’s open letter to the Prime Minister**](https://www.change.org/p/andy-burnham-protect-our-kids-from-deadly-heatwave-temperatures?ref=thegreenparent.co.uk), amid growing concern from mothers about the effects of increasingly extreme temperatures on children. It calls on the Prime Minister to:

- urgently adapt homes, schools and other public infrastructure for increasing heat;
- invest in clean, affordable renewable energy; and
- oppose new North Sea oil and gas drilling, including the Rosebank oil field.

The UK Health Security Agency identifies babies and children under five among those at highest risk during hot weather. \[2\] Mothers Rise Up says families need urgent action to make the places children live, learn and receive care safer as temperatures rise.

**Joanna Groves, 31, mother of two, says:** *“My four-year-old daughter developed heat exhaustion after nursery and became so unwell that an ambulance was sent. Our home was also dangerously hot, and we went into debt buying an air conditioner just to make one room safe enough to sleep in.”*

**Dr. Lorna Powell, co-director of Mothers Rise Up, says:** *“As both a doctor and a mother, I’ve seen how much children are suffering in extreme heat. We need decisive government action now to adapt homes, schools and hospitals alongside an urgent transition towards clean renewable energy and away from the fossil fuels that drive extreme heat.”*

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are unequivocally driving global warming. \[3\] Mothers Rise Up says protecting children means acting on both sides of the crisis: adapting homes, schools and public services to hotter temperatures now, while accelerating the transition to clean energy and away from further fossil fuel expansion, including the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields.
