The menopause is often seen as a troublesome period for women to negotiate, and, in the past, has been a taboo subject. However, grower, forager, homeopath and herbalist Amanda Saurin sees it as not a loss but a gain, women coming into their power. This Menopause Awareness Day she shares her secrets.

Her company, AS Apothecary – based near Lewes with an 80 acre organic farm that make beautiful quality skincare products from scratch – has produced the Meno Miracle kit, a collection of products to help you navigate this period in your life

“The menopause has been demonised. The discourse around it is frequently not about women but instead relative to men. It is often discussed as women becoming difficult, uncontrollable and less desirable. This is, of course, nonsense. What we need to do is reframe the discussion positively – issues pertaining to pregnancy are finished so sex can be wildly liberating. Women can become the essence of themselves again – sometimes lost over the years of accommodating everyone else. I love to see women blossom. Alleviating symptoms is about deconstructing the problem. If you’re constantly told that you’re being difficult, if you feel hot and cold by turn, if you worry about whether you are competent as a worker, partner, mother, you lose sleep because you’re worrying. Your libido vanishes and your memory is affected because you’re tired, and very quickly women become caught in a negative loop. I think that there are instances where HRT is appropriate and the support of a GP is essential. However I don’t think it need be a first choice. Make yourself a priority, perhaps for the first time in your adult life. Talk to other women and feel supported. Laugh, dance, do yoga, Tai Chi or anything else that makes you feel good.

Our kit has a fan, Everywoman Tea, a Calm & Tranquil Balm, cooling Rose Aromatic Water and candle – all of these help to restore balance; physical and emotional. Lie down somewhere comfortable and indulge. Diet-wise, plan to calm your system and help your adrenals, liver and kidneys to function as well as possible. Foods that are fresh, wholegrain, essential fatty acid rich can help, as will foods rich in phytoestrogens. Drinking plenty of water is a must. Needless to say reducing refined sugar, caffeine and alcohol is a good plan. Fermented foods that rebalance the gut biome are also very helpful. I am a firm believer in pro-ageing, about keeping the skin in really good condition, healthy and glowing. As you reach the peri-menopause your skin’s needs will begin to change. You may find that you have breakouts for the first time since puberty or that your skin begins to feel drier. What is most important is to be gentle. At A.S Apothecary we can help you work out a routine to suit your skin.”
