RECIPE AND MAKE Flipping Great
Tuesday is Pancake Day! Stock up on supplies this weekend, and sneak in a little tossing practice ahead of the big fry up. There’s a great selection of alternative recipes for pancakes here, that includes dairy-free, vegan, cornmeal, buckwheat, ricotta and savoury versions. We’re also fans of Jamie Oliver’s vegan blueberry treats. if your kids aren’t quite old enough to help toss the pancakes, why not make this crafty and cute pan-and-cake for them to help join in?

EVENT Steaming In
The wonderful (and free) Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester is running a series of events this weekend that conjure up the sights, sounds and smells of Victorian times. Make your own goo, ride a vintage carousel (£2), visit the Cotton Mill Circus, make a magic lantern, take a moustache-and-bonnet-clad selfie in the photo booth, listen to live music, see a real steam engine at work, or watch an incredible explosion-featuring show. Industrial helpings of fun!

MAKE Counter Revolution
Love playing board games with your family? Why not double the fun and make your own. This Martha Stewart checkerboard not only looks beautiful, but also folds up, so you can take it on the road. There are traditional games from around the world such as the African Mancala, solitaire and Viking Fox and Geese here, and sportier games here, which include blow skiing and indoor golf. If you get really fired up and start designing your own, more complex games, try this forum for the geekiest of tips.

LEARN What’s Cooking?
We’re always looking for fun experiments to try at home, and these University of Sheffield tutorials for kids blew our taste buds as well as our minds. Easy to try in your own kitchen, the series of Edible Experiments teach chemistry using ingredients you’ll find in your cupboards and fridge. Led by the wonderful Dr Joanna Buckley, the 13 tutorials are easy to follow and could spark your child’s interest in cooking as well as the elements.

EVENT What’s The Story?
The Horniman Museum makes for one of the best days out in London, packed with strange exhibits, quirky exhibitions, and surrounded by beautiful gardens and nature trails in which to wander. This Sunday, join in its free World of Stories, where some of the best storytellers in the city will whisk you and your over 5s away to faraway places and different times. We’re also fans of their Saturday Farmers’ Market.
