Spectacular street theatre and circus comes to Stockton-on-Tees every year at the town’s colourful, free outdoor festival. Expect eye-popping spectacle and extraordinary circus feats from world class artists. Saturday’s carnival procession brings rhythms and dance to the streets of the town. Festival of Thrift - Billingham, County Durham, 20-21 September

This party makes low-cost living bright and fun. It’s a riot of workshops; make poetic pennants, hedgerow tea or hand salve, dance at a ceilidh, or join a kids hammering and sawing class. Take some unneeded bits to the swap shop, repair a much-loved item at the Fix It Cafe, learn about budgeting and get some make-do-and-mend tips. There’s lots of entertainment, art, storytelling and wild fun on offer too. Entry free, park and ride for a couple of pounds.
