Warm, deeply wise and with a sparkling, impish nature, Candace Savage is the grandmother of dreams. Her love of nature and insight into our relationships with the wild are captured in her award-winning books, including A Geography of Blood and How To Know a Crow, her book for children aged 9 to 12. Charmingly illustrated by Rachel Hudson, it follows the life story of a young crow, Okie, with incredible facts about these members of the corvid family and ideas for crow-based activities. Warning: these magnificent black birds might become your family's new obsession.
“I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which is a small city on the northern Great Plains in Canada. My house is two blocks from the bank of a very beautiful river called the South Saskatchewan River, which connects the Rocky Mountains to the Arctic Ocean; it passes by our place on its way to Hudson Bay.
I work as a writer and also as a community organiser, and I'm a grandma! I work with others to do small-scale interventions in our city. We try to nurture nature in our urban lives. We have a wonderful project called Pollinator Paradise; we encourage people to grow native prairie plants to support pollinators, which feed birds. These little interventions feel very important. And, of course, the plants that grow naturally here are beautiful.
