Hello,

A big, warm welcome to this week’s newsletter.

It’s been a funny old week here – the little one has had a fever and so we’ve spent a lot of time lying in bed together with a pile of books.

And, I got to meet my new nephew!

Workwise, it’s been all about collating the entries into our 2024 Writing Competition and working on our next edition, number 122, which comes out next month.

Here’s what I’ve been up to

Reading Novels…

I just finished The Bee Sting by Paul Murray – late to the party again! It won Irish Book of the Year and was short-listed for the Booker Prize last year. How good is this rangy novel? I loved it, but urgently need to discuss the ending. If you’ve read it, drop me a line! Also by another prize-winning Paul – I read This Other Eden by Paul Harding this week. A beautifully written tale of an island off the East coast of the US in the late eighteenth century. When a missionary lands on the shores the islanders' lives are uprooted and the community broken up. It was shocking to read that this book was based on a true story. Hard, but mesmerising.

… And Children’s Fiction
