It was the most beautiful Moses basket - pretty cream and green satin bows on the outside and soft cotton sheets and cosy blankets inside. Heavily pregnant with my first son, I’d stand and stare at it, imagining my baby sleeping dreamily in this perfect little bed.

Four sons later I sold it to a couple who remarked on its pristine condition. “Well,” I said, “the only thing that ever slept in there was … the cat!” I wasn’t joking. Repeated studies show that, in spite of parents being urged to put their babies in their own cots to sleep, 9 out of 10 of us end up, at least sometimes, hauling our babies into bed overnight.
