Darker nights mean forests transformed into glittering light trails, building a marigold-decked altar and remembering precious moments with those we miss, and free film screenings and events for young people across the country

Remember, Remember

Traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, and most widely observed in Mexico, Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead festival is all about gathering to remember friends and family members who have died. It’s a joyous, upbeat celebration, as participants tell funny stories about those who have left this world. Mexibrit, with support from the Mexico Embassy have organised a huge, free celebration in Hackney, with two days of culture, live music, workshops, arts, dance and street markets.

Why not gather with your family to remember your most missed friends and relatives? You might like to make an altar with marigolds, tissue paper ‘papel picado’ (find out how to make it here), candles, water, photographs and marigolds. Or create sugar skulls, an art that dates back to the 17th century when Catholic friars introduced gravestone art to the people of Mexico.
