Fun Fungi
Mushroom season is in full swing. It’s time to forage for ceps, puffballs and parasols. It’s important to be careful when picking your fungi; find a good guide from the Woodland Trust here. If you’re lucky, you might find a giant puffball mushroom; huge, football-sized growths that appear in open grasslands, pastures, parks and roadsides. They’re easily identified, safe to eat and have the most progeny of any living thing; on average each mushroom produces seven trillion spores! You’ll find them after heavy rain, sometimes hiding among nettles, and they can grow up to 80cm across! Fry them as a substitute for steaks, grill them with garlic and herbs, or make Puffball Schnitzel!
Celebrate Radical Creativity
The first weekend in October (2-4 October) is Fun Palaces, a UK-wide celebration of community, passions and radical creativity, showing that art and education are powerful tools for social change.
