Difficult news, whether about conflict around the world or sensitive events closer to home, can be accessible to everyone, including young children. Their exposure can be tricky to control; they may overhear adult conversations, encounter snippets on TV and radio, or talk with peers in the playground. Yet as parents and carers, we don’t need to completely shield children from the world around them. We can lean on techniques to explain difficult news in a child-friendly way, without causing fear.
